I wish I knew so many people were going for it then I'd have started sooner and tried myself. As it is I started with just 3 hours left, climbed to 1020 in 2:20 and shielded out from there. Just in my bracket I saw at least 1 get it who needed it (jozier) and another was awfully close but not positive if he made it or not (deertylunatic - was going to retreat to you at the end if my alliance weren't exactly 100th). Of course they have maxed xforce though. He does seem necessary to win matches fast enough, but maybe there is an all 3* comp I'm forgetting (patch hulk?).
Patch Hulk would work if you were able to shield hop.

But once you're above 800 and every team is Xforce, 4hor or Xforce and 4hor, you are suddenly a drink of water in a hot desert. And you will get torn up so fast from attacks.

    I've tried it.

I used to use Patch Hulk to kill Xforce 4hor teams, since it's pretty much guaranteed, but then you get attacked twice as much as if you just left out your Xforce and [insert character] on defense.

(bla bla bla)... since I already maxed Thor.

The most relevant part of the whole post. So you ALMOST made it to 1300 using fully maxed XF/Thor/Hood.
    Congrats.

Now to contribute something to this topic, here's my journey to 1300:
    - maxed XForce/Hood/Lazy Thor
    - chose slice 5 since I believed it to be where the big guns were (I was right)
    - shielded from ~ 800 points, that's when I started being hammered
    - tried for three matches per hop, got hit regularly during the 3rd match, so for the last three hops I did only two matches per hop. Playing a single match per hop won't get you anywhere near 1100, let alone 1300.
    - total costs: 1275 HP, including a 100 HP boost.

The magic ingredient was however access to inside information about when were the big guns unshielding (X Men, Crewsaders, etc)
Without that information I couldn't ever reach 1300, because:
    1. It's awful hard to find targets worth 30+. Going for 20+ doesn't mitigate the hits you'll definitely be getting during hops.
    2. If you find them and line them up, but you start hitting when they're unshielded, a retaliation is guaranteed. Not from them, but from their alliance buddies. As alliance members are scattered in all brackets, someone will see your leaderboard, notice when you unshield, and signal the others. If anyone is hopping, you're toast icon_e_smile.gif

So, to sum it up. With the best 4* in the game, maxed featured char and a decent maxed 3*, I barely made it to 1300 only because I'm part of a top 10 alliance.
In other words, the new game is "pay over your nose for a character or give up and settle for top 25 instead of top 5". And get a maxed Lady Thor in at least 6 months, probably just before she's nerfed.

The only reason so many people made it this time (yes I did, barely) was because Hood was featured. If it was say Doom like it is now, It would not be so easy, I ran X-Force/C.Mags/Hood all maxed, my 4hor was only 3/2/2 at the time and I followed a strict regimine of 3hr shield, 8 hour shield with only 1 misshap. I did not like it and think the only reason I got there was becaue Hood was featured so next 4hor cover coming up I'm curious as to what will happen.

Why mess around with shields and MMR and other things? Just cap maximum points for each PVP at 1300.

What happens when there's a 15-way tie for first?

In this case, the ranks will be determined by who got to the cap first, rather than who got the most points. I can just imagine the uproar for season tie breakers...

We already have this. It's called The Gauntlet.
  • I hit 1323 with Max hood, 270 XF and 200 Nick Fury. I used a lot of boost. Timed my shields to keep up with the heavy hitters in Slice 5. I may have sniped a few folks, but its a part of versus mode and sorry if FR3L4NCER came across your retal nodes. Besides that it was pretty challenging. You definitely have to Q up your targets during peak hop times and while making each hop count. If your team isnt Offensively and defensively capable of fending off the other hoppers out there, well you took that gamble on your points. Also having a good defense team will net you some defense shield wins. Otherwise its just another hump the Devs put out that we can overcome with the will to win! I definitely grabbed my Lady Thor. apparently we also started a war with the Xmen because some folks cant handle getting sniped.

I'm currently considering whether I should level my 3/5/3 Nick Fury to pair with my level 245 5/5/3 Xforce or if I should wait until I get more 4hor covers.

Do you find Nick Fury to be worth the ISO? Does he net a lot of defensive wins?
  • Nick Fury definitely provides a few occasional D
defense wins if specced correctly. 5 yellow and 5 blue 3 purple will be his best defensive build. Those traps are pretty harmful and the AI loves to soak up blue tiles with Fury. Hes not nearly as powerful as T4or, but he will pack a punch and get you some good points on offense with XF.

Hi - I just finished the Doctor's Orders PVP - this was the slot that ended at 10am Eastern (can't remember if it was the first or second time slot).

Anyway, in my shard exactly 1 person finished with 1300 points - a person from Crewsaders. That means only only one player got any 4* covers. At least this person got an Elektra cover....

    #2 finished with 1204, #3 finished with 1106...and #10 had 992.

Not surprisingly, EVERY PLAYER in Top 10 had a FULLY COVERED 4Thorverine combo.

So.. the moral of the story continues - 4* transition has ground to a halt. I don't see how the game is going to add very many new players to the 4* player-base at this rate. And hence we need to continue to point out to Demiurge that their desire to "make the transition easier than it was from 2* -> 3* " is not yet working. In fact, it's almost certainly resulting in less minutes/day of play from a growing portion of the player-base. Though, I would LOVE to see actual data from Demiurge on those kinds of stats.

    Yea.

With the new rules on shield cooldowns, I don't see myself getting to 1300 ever again, so I may quit before I ever fully cover 4hor.

But 3/5/3 Nick Fury may be worth the ISO, since he has 5 in his main attraction ability. I think he's who I'll level next.

    Thanks!

I'm probably going to get **** and flooded with hate for this, but I'm not impressed with Fury. I have him at 5/5/3, lvl 270, and I use him very rarely. He's decent for certain PvE battles, but at the end of the day, he tanks too many colors and is only good for 1-2 battles before he's too hurt to continue, soaking up your health packs like a fiend. I have also gotten ZERO defensive wins with him in PvP. Even running him next to lvl 270 Xforce and 249 Hood in the Unholy Outlaw event, I got absolutely hammered by attacks. In a world dominated by Xforce and 4hor, he's the She-Hulk of the 4*s. Playable, but at the end of the day, hes no Thor or Xforce.

    This is what scares me.

Some people have characterized him as, basically, a 3 star.

An expensive as **** 3 star haha.

I wish I had 4hor with that many covers.

You and me both brother. I was very excited when I got Fury leveled up, I thought I could finally play in the big leagues with my fancy new 4* team. Then 4-Thor came out and IMO completely obsoleted him. icon_e_sad.gif ...How so many people have her fully covered is beyond me. Thru alliance season rewards, a few pre-cooldown 1300s and 2 lucky token pulls, I've gotten her to 4/2/2, which seems light years away from her ever being usable. I know, I know. #firstworldproblems. icon_e_wink.gif

    Yea.... :\.

I mean, my roster right now is good enough to get a strong score with minimal shielding. Maybe I can wait on it for a while.

I just don't know who I should level next.

With the new emphasis on 4 star characters, it feels like leveling 3 stars is just a waste of ISO.

Yea, I'm pretty much taking this season "off". Barely broke 800 in the last pvp, my lowest score since seasons were introduced, because really, what's the point? Leader of my bracket had 1555. No way in hell can I compete with that, so why waste hp shielding? I'm also sitting on enough ISO to level 2 whole 3*, but again, what's the point? I'll give it some time and see how it shakes out, but the longer I'm not interested in trying to better my roster, the better the chance I'll move on to other games icon_neutral.gif

You guys should interview The Crewsaders. Over 2k. Check out leaderboard in AOO.

Oh, I know how they're doing it. They're coordinating out of game, snyching up their hops and spending 575 hp every couple hours to cycle thru the 3 shield types to get around the cooldown windows. I'd rather save my hp and just buy covers than plan my life around the game, seems like the better option to me.

I question your math. Unless this figure is meant to represent the entire alliance? I can tell you for certain that my per-hour shield spend came in well under that number.
