HP Advice Poll: When is is worth 1250HP to upgrade a skill?

Hi MPQ Friends, I'd like to here all of your advice, especially those who have done this purchase. When, if ever, does it make sense to upgrade one of your 3* characters powers for 1250HP? I have most 3* characters at low levels and all 2* characters maxed.
I'm currently sitting on enough HP to do a couple of big moves: Should I???
- Buy more roster slots (I have 45 with 3 open)
- Upgrade my Alliance ( I have five slots open)
- Upgrade a 3* character power?
Of the 3* characters I was considering upgrading, I have in order:
- Lvl 117 Hood at 3 yellow, 3 blue, 1 black (#1 choice, another Blue for Dormammu's Aid)
- Lvl 133 Hulk at 5 green, 5 red, 2 black (#2 choice, another Black for Anger)
- Lvl 102 Thor at 3 red, 2 yellow, 3 green (???)
- Lvl 91 Daken at 1 purple, 3 black, 3 blue (???)
- Lvl 66 Sentry at 1 red, 2 green, 2 yellow (???)
I figure this post might help me make an informed decision, and possibly help others who might be wondering how best to spend their HP. Thanks to everyone for contributing your opinion. I'd appreciate it if everyone would state if they made this purchase or not, along with their opinions. P.S You Rock!

For the characters you're considering:
Hood - Not a bad move.
The rest - Bad move.
The only cover purchase I've ever made was for a fourth Hood B. Generally, only the fifth cover of a killer power is maybe worth 1250 HP. Fifth Hood B, fifth Rogers R/B, fifth Hulk K, fifth Sentry G, etc.0 -
My (personal) take would be to hold the HP for shields (plus use 350 for the Anniversary single token daily deal) before even considering upping a skill.
From there, I would NOT do the ones you are suggesting. Follow HailMary's suggestion, wait for it to be the fifth cover you need, and only for a very few (Hood/Sentry/DevD, maybe SuperSteve).0 -
I have purchased a total of 6 covers.
2 for , 4 for . They were the last covers I needed for each of them. Prior to buying any of those covers, I made sure I had the to immediately bring them to the next softcap in levels, or max them outright.
Those were also key in helping me win many of the other covers I wanted.
Unless the covers are going to have a drastic and immediate effect on your gameplay, you may want to reconsider them.0 -
I certainly would suggest you hold off at least through the anniversary celebration week as you never know what luck you'll have amidst this barrage of tokens. After that, I'd also recommend you wait until you get a 4th Hood Blue some other way and maybe use the HP for a fifth, but wouldn't recommend you spend that HP on a third- or even fourth cover for the other skills you mention.
I'd also second the recommendation to just earmark 350 HP to grab an anniversary token every day this week.0 -
I have never purchased a cover. Granted, I've been playing since November, but I have every 3* cover maxed except the recent ones (Captain Marvel's missing one, DP is missing five until tomorrow, Beast and Doc Ock both five, Colossus three).0

Great Advice so far! Thanks. I never thought of using the HP on the daily deal all week. I just opened the two award packs I won from the anniversary event and got TWO Devil Dinos IN A ROW! One Green and one Pink, Wow!
I love Devil Dino's little fingies wavin around on his pink move lol0 -
For my 2 cents: Don't spend anything on covers, rule of thumb: it should be your 13:th either to max out or to change the current 13 cover config. Like getting Hulk from 5/4/4 to 5/3/5.
Spend you HP on Shields so you can score Top25 in all events. And if you consistently get above 600 points, join a Top100 Alliance. That extra 3* cover every other day is whats really gonna get your roster going.0 -
i have played 128 days and collected 259 covers.
out of the 259 3* covers, 31 was from the 10x and 42x pack. which meant I got an average of 2 3* covers per day from rewards/placement/token free pulls
imo it is not worth it to spent 1250 to upgrade any.
however I did purchase a blue cover for my level 94 hood which took it from 3 -> 4 and it made a world of difference allowing me to survive some key PvE matches.0 -
I bought a blue for hood as his 13th cover. Blue hood was a progression reward in the very next PVE. But I wasn't unhappy with my purchase either way.0

It's worth it if you know where the truly game breaking powers are. If you bought Magnetic Field covers anywhere longer than 3 months ago the cover almost certainly paid for itself. Right now there isn't anything as interesting as Magnetic FIeld in the 3* territory given the looming Sentry nerf. The 5th cover for Dormammu's Aid might be worth it, but you still need other characters to build around the The Hood.0
-
I bought my 3rd Sentry yellow so I could level him to 166. Was definitely worth it.0
-
I bought 2, maybe 3 rags covers, and that pretty much got me set for months0
-
I bought my fifth blue Hood but it paid for itself in the 6 weeks it took for one to turn up in a token so I'm not disappointed.0
-
My hood has been sitting collecting dust for 6 months. He only had 2 blue covers. I had a surplus of HP and decided to buy the third cover. It's still not ideal but he went from getting the 2 worst colors to stealing the 2 best ones.0

Generally speaking, the times to buy covers is when you have a character at reasonably high level with a whole bunch of covers, who needs one more cover to become truly great. For example, buying the 5th black cover for Hulk makes him just that much better, because suddenly Anger turns him into a hard counter for patch, making each match they make after Berserker Rage a one-way AOE nuke in your favor. Or the 5th blue cover for Hood, because hood without 5 blue covers is meh, and hood with 5 blue covers is godlike.
Alternatively, if you feel like really splurging on a new character, you could help fill in the blanks. Like, say when Deadpool came out you got 4 covers in the PvE and 4 covers in the PvP, and now you want to drop hero points to max him out because you realize "oh **** this guy is stupid good". But that's more of a big-money option you should only go for if you either have a ton of hero points saved or want to drop a bunch of cash. And only ever do that if you also have around 100k iso saved up - a fully covered 3* at level 40 is usually still pretty bad. In fact, that's important either way - make sure you have the ISO to make your purchase worthwhile!
So yeah, that's basically my advice.0 -
I think I bought a OBW cover and a Hood cover. Both of them were for the fifth blue, and I don't regret either (even though I only use Hood in PvE or his featured event). I still need to figure out what level to leave him with the level shift so he is covered on the offense.
OBW prior to "True Healing" led to my roster as is. Hood is just so darn fun to use.
I would never recommend buying a cover unless it switches a build or maxes a "top tier" character (and you have the ISO). If you don't have the ISO to fill out the levels you are far better off hoarding the HP for slots and shielding when you really want a prize. I am sitting on over 4K HP, and may just spend it like a drunken sailor on the last day of the Anniversary just because it is a party.0 -
A strong Thor, Hulk, or LDaken is worth a ton more than a bunch of single-use shields. They make it so you don't have to shield nearly as much, and they can increase defensive wins.
I'd put covers toward Thor. The faster you get him covered the better you'll place in pvp. He plays great on offense and defense, high health, powers feed his other powers, green damages all three enemies, teams well with most characters, and also can scare away people looking for fast wins.

The first 3* I had that was more than a couple covers was LCap. Buying his 4th red was the best move I made in the game. It took him from good to great. Returning 10 red rather than 9 doesn't sound like much, but the most likely way of reaching the necessary 11 red AP is four match-3s (12). When the cd tile returns 10 red and 1 already in the bank, it turned his red into a perpetual engine of 3400+ damage every three turns.
More generally, I'd put covers to characters that deal AoE damage. And don't dismiss the 2nd tier characters. Get to 5 red on Punisher and he's taking down any character once they're below 40% of max health. No need to wait until you can level him up. Patch at 4 or 5 yellow becomes extremely tough to even damage and is huge for lightning round iso farming. Etc. One cover can take a mostly unusable character into something that contributes significantly.0 -
looking for some advice: If I'm trying to build up one particular character (Deadpool) would it be better to get a 10 pack he is featured in with a 6% draw rate or would I be better off buying 2 or 3 individual covers.?
I have all 3 colors for deadpool( 2,3,1) so I could take my pick of a couple of powers. As far as the 10 pack, it does have a few 3 stars I could use but all of the 2 stars are unusable.0 -

Don't buy packs. Buy the covers you need rather than depend on chance working out for you. Buying three 3* covers you want will cost 1250 x 3 = 3750. Typical pack from a special event will cost 3800 and will have 2-3 gold covers. Very rare they have more and sometimes they have none. But even if you get 3 gold, who knows what they'll be.0 -
The chance of getting the particular 3* in the 10-pack has to be around 15% to be neutral buying the 10 pack versus just upgrading the ability 3 times with the same HP, provided you've the base covers to work with. Since this hasn't happened for a long time, it's not worth it unless you've no choice.0
