So... What the hell is up with skipping and MMR?

I just skipped a node 4 times and noticed something odd. Then I decided "I'm going to skip until this patter stops". Here's what it looked like:

Ryesteve
Boom2

Ryesteve
Ryesteve
Boom2
Ryesteve

...Okay, never mind, I think I'll run out of ISO before I find a different match.

So I move on to a different node... Hmm, team I can't beat. *Skip* AND IT'S BOOM2 AGAIN.

In fact, now that I've gone around and skipped a bit, on every single one of the 5 nodes on the SHIELD sim, I have exactly one person I get over and over and over again on that node. It's worth noting that these are all people whose rosters are considerably more developed than mine (I'm running Ares/OBW/2* Daken; they're running LDaken/Sentry/LThor), but that really doesn't matter that much - it's specifically these 5 people, and NO-ONE ELSE. In my immediate vicinity on my bracket, there are 9 people not shielded. I'd consider fighting them and losing, but the points loss would be rather extreme.

What the hell. I ended up using a cosmic shield, because there's not a single match here I stand a chance in hell of winning, and I want to hit that 10k season reward with the Ragnarok event and not get swarmed for 50 points per match at the end of the day. But this is just... what the hell. What is wrong with the matchmaking? icon_evil.gif

That's a bit more extreme than I'm getting - I've got a pool of about eight(?) I'm seeing constantly - but it's pretty much the same for me. I'm so sick of seeing the same maxed Hulks and Lazy Thors with the odd Sentry/Daken combo for variety.
  • I can sort of deal with Hulk and Thor - AP denial + Anti-Grav device. But Daken? Oog. That's just death.

I can deal with them - they're just so beefy that it takes a while icon_e_biggrin.gif
  • But seriously, in a game where my bracket has 5000 people in it and I'm not even breaking top 50, there is no reason why I should constantly be given the same 5 people - especially when their rosters so severely outclass me as to be unwinnable.
  • Besides just a terrible algorithm, I've been thinking that this is another symptom of something I've been suspecting for a while: bad random number generation.

That's why every player needs to know what tanking is... (Not everyone needs to tank, especially not developed 3* rosters, but not many people can afford to shieldhop, so there.)
  • Currently having the same issue. No points nodes above 25 and I only have 900 points. The same opponents keep showing up after a cycle.

    Any fixes/workarounds to this?
  • The same opponents you see is not some kind of accident. The game obviously tries to setup a group of people you'll likely be playing most of the time as opposed to just find a random opponent out of the entire pool of players that happen to match your MMR. Now I don't know of anyone who likes seeing the same 5 guys over and over but that's not an accident and these issues are hard to fix because it's a philsophical one, not a mechanical one. Someone must have thought this is a good idea and nothing's going to change until that guy changes his mind.
  • It's really frustrating getting hit by the same person over and over again, especially when they are 300+ points below you. So I try not to hit the same person more than once. Except when I get the same five people over and over and I have no choice. Sorry Rezin1234 and OneAC, I've already spent a thousand ISO trying to break out of my current bubble.
  • This game is giving me hell today. I've been tanking like crazy in the sim but the Magneto event I am seeing nothing but maxed out 3 and 4 star teams. I don't even have 600 points anymore, I' can't get any advancement because when I fight the 20 point teams I come out looking sing 40+ points. It's the most frustrating thing I've encountered in this game.

I'm seeing the same thing and so are others in my alliance. Feels like there is some MMR tuning that has gone on, or we are still suffering from post BoP hangover.

I have had this before as well, when you get high up in the rankings early on when noone else has made a push, there seems to be only 4 options. you can lock 2 in a node then if there is no one else around it just toggles between the last two characters ad nauseum. You usually get the choice between:

    Sentry/ Daken/ featured or
    Sentry/ Hood/ featured

Seems MMR in general is pretty messed up and skipping has become half the game!

Something is definitely different. Teams got harder faster, and I was attacked much earlier than normal. It feels like everything happened around 150 to 200 points earlier than normal.

everyone in my alliance noticed this.

also thanks to the person who gave me +48 by losing to me twice after i shielded
  • Yup, this was a deeply unpleasant experience. Got to 600 easy as usual (in the first 12 hours or so) then pushed up to 800 where I usually start to encounter attacks, shielded up then next morning I unshielded and BANG hit for 90 points within 5 minutes, then pushed up again and hit again, and again and again.

For someone who usually has no trouble getting 1000-1300 points I really struggled to get a decent score without XTREME shield hopping. Seemed like everyone was seeing me as a viable attack target after about 700 points despite running a (usually offputting) Hood, Sentry, Mags combo most of the time.

I saw a few of the usual suspects reach decent scores in this one, but a lot of regular 1k scorers didn't perform half as well.

8 hours before end of event I was trying to climb to my usual 600 from 240 pts. Generally it is an effort for 45 minutes. It took me double that time. I was encountering teams worth 23 points max, disregarding how much did I 'pay' for skipping. I on the other hand noticed the diversity, no longer I was facing maxed characters (either 2* or 3*), I was encountering very mixed rosters all the way up.

Could use a guide for that or at least something more than 'wipe on purpose' in FAQ. I didn't manage to get single 3 cover last season from PvP due to untouchable opponents for my roster...

For example - if in PvP you encounter 166 wall, try to go to simulator, use your weak team members and on purpose lose few fights. And by losing I mean, you need to get beaten (Hitpoints = 0) not just escape from fight. Then go back to PvP, skip those 166 opponents you saw there and you should see easier fights on those nodes again. I am not a big fan of this though, I consider it 'cheating'...
