So...I remember IceIX says devs read every post in this forum.

I think now they are busy watching live streams of World Cup in their fitted kitchen, wearing oakleys and nikes, while smearing on the skin lotions.

On Jun 27, I asked IceIX to make these guys moderators:

    Amanda1983, johnaaron33, jojeda654, and locked

locked reports more spam than anybody else, so he'd be a natural. It's not too hard to build up a list of who has reported a lot of spam, so that could be repeated -- really good spam reporters could be upgraded to spam deleters.

Next, the current system is really good at reporting the IP addresses of moderators, such as IceIX being 67.158.118.130, but getting the IP address of a spammer is currently a 10-step process. I just removed about a hundred spam messages, and I can't go through a 10-step process 100 times right now. If getting those IP addresses was a lot easier, then I could ban IP addresses a lot easier.

The site uses PHPBB 3.0.12 with some hacks. IceIX looked at https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/ ... block_mod/ , but that only goes up to PHPBB 3.0.11 -- this is for a blacklist checker.

I deleted message "okwroersatdsdsasdelp mmyopdsdsazwbqg " while it still had zero views, so that's evidence that D3 doesn't read every post.

Are you sure those people are so eager to do slave labor of sisyphus?

Really how hard it would be to require 1 pt of reputation to spawn a topic to stop 99.9% of this madness for good without wasting people's time to either ban, delete or just report or look or skip.

Then I'd have to strip 100 spam messages 1 by 1 out of legitimate threads. This is a terrible suggestion.
  • I think the issue with the spam is that there is very poor spam bot detection being used on this forum.

Ever tried to ban this IP? icon_e_biggrin.gif

Early on, I almost banned my own IP address when I thought they listed the spammer's IP address. Fortunately, I looked up the IP address location first, and recognized that the location arrow was pretty much pointing at my home.

And we just know the bots are that smart to go ahead with that alternate tactics. So in fact we use the forum threads INTENTIONALLY as honeypot? And allow to post links to newcomers for the same reason?

I think the issue with the spam is that there is very poor spam bot detection being used on this forum.

If IceIX just deactivated all the search bots on the site except for say Google (Because really, who uses anything other than Google anymore?), I think it would eventually slow the heard of spammers. It wouldn't be an immediate fix, but it would help in the long term. (Edit: This would also help with the forum server lag when there are a lot of actual users on the site. The bots severely slow down the server response when a lot of people are on because they are indexing EVERYTHING.)

Plus there are other minor tweaks you can make to slow it down. You can add a captcha code to the new thread post feature that you have to enter every time you post, (Most of us wouldn't mind, although I am sure there are a few who would **** and moan) and you can set parameters that after so many up-votes, the username is "trusted" and no longer needs to do so.

Or if IceIX just added enough mods, which is what is really needed, you could have the new thread post "pending mod approval". But he would have to promote enough Mods so that there are always Mods available.

Or, he could set if up that the first 5 post have to activated by a link sent to the users email address.

Or my favorite option, ( icon_lol.gif ) D3/Demuirge could pay me (I'd even accept slightly above min wage salary...) to be logged on for a minimum of 40 hours a week to combat SPAM, help keep the threads neat, clean, and cordial. And help with CS (if D3 paid me a few bucks more) since they seem to be so OVERWHELMED.

I could go on and on. . .

    Extra edits are for spelling.

Thanks Nonce! I appreciate the nominations. I spoke to IceIX about this, and I was supposed to have an answer last Monday, and haven't heard from him since.

Am I a close 2nd? I want to grind those SPAM nodes a little harder to get that IW cover. icon_lol.gif

Something I find annoying. Go to index.php
Near the bottom -- Our newest member vgthdezw
With a multistep process, I can find and lookup his IP address -- http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/59.56.44.199
That's Fuzhou, China ... this is going to be a spammer. Almost all this spam comes from China.

I take it you are not allowed to pre-ban?
