Why do players with MAXED OUT covers still compete?

I've snooping around the rosters of the top 10 players in the PvP/PvE events and have noticed that a lot of them ALREADY have maxed out covers of the cover prize being handed out.

So why are they still grinding for those useless covers that they will sell for ISO anyway? Is it for the measly 50-100 HP (unlikely since they probably shield-hop for PvP events to get top 10)? For pride? For Alliance ranking?

Enlighten me, please. icon_e_biggrin.gif

  • Is say it is either some kind of enjoyment for the game or enjoyment in denying you those covers. I'm also convinced that the top 2-3% are actually D3 employees and their minions. But I have a dark and evil mind.
  • A lot do it for the Alliance they are in.

Nowadays, I routinely get top 10 without spending any shields at all: that 100HP adds up over time as it's my main source of HP income now that I've given up being a PvE grinder.
  • In no particular order: Seasons, alliances, pride, entertainment, HP

I do slack off. If I need the covers I shield hop to just over 1100 points. If I do not need the covers I climb to 900 and shield until the end of the event. With a score of 900 there a good chance of getting the alliance into the top 50.
  • I hit first in just about every PVP with one shield. I earn HP doing so, gain seasons points, help my alliance, and get lots of ISO which is what I need.
  • Season 2 : lacked motivation, that's right
Season 3.1 : decided to rank for the Alliance
Season 3.2 : try to improve my game (PvE and PvP) and give the points to the new Alliance

And most of all : grind ISO that we need so much of.

Well...I have season 3 placement to think about, and of course, our alliance placement. Some members of an alliance still need certain covers too. Of course, there are things like they may need more iso for leveling other characters as well.
  • My competing lets other alliance members take it easy when real life stuff comes up.
  • ISO. I have Daredevil cover-maxed but finished top 5 for 5000 ISO, plus 4 covers (another 2000 ISO), plus my Alliance, plus my season ranking, plus this is the game. In the past, I might have taken this sort of tournament lightly, but I need something like 900k ISO just to get my varsity team and those ready to join it up to their level caps.

that is why MMR brackets should be fixed so that they are sharded into their own brackets and let the ones that really need it to compete for it on a fair even field.

Your name looks familiar for some reason. No idea why. Oh well.

Multi-thread whining on the same topic, impressive.

Why does the team that wins the Super Bowl try to win the Super Bowl again the next year? I mean, they already have the trophy, right? They should just make room for the other teams to play on a level playing field. It's not fair for a team that good to play teams that aren't as good as them.
  • I am not sure what the confusion is. It's not like there are a bunch of PvP tournaments going on at once. I would play PvP events for covers I don't have as my first choice but it's basically always one at a time (other than the 12 hr crossover every Friday)
Are you wondering why we are playing at all? Cause you are kinda making it seem like "oh I have all the covers. Game over for me"
I play for the reasons mentioned above: seasons, alliance, ISO, pride

As for the suggestion that all elite players get moved into 1-several brackets, that would result in a lot of rage quitting because no one "only" wants to compete against the toughest of the tough 24/7. That's not fair either. Additionally once people "graduate" from these new weak brackets, they will be real angry about being placed in w straight beasts

The system is quite good as it is. Anyone w 3+ maxed 85s can place in top 25 (top 10 as well if you're really good). Assuming you're in a decent alliance (good ones are always scouting), that's 2-3 covers per event, which is more than enough to have a good collection within a few weeks

Personally, I think the biggest problem 2* players have is they enter events at absolutely the wrong time aka starting right away. Start an event right away if you wanna be grouped w the most hardcore people. Wait around for better brackets lol

Sorry to burst your bubble but you're not winning any Superbowl trophies, you're only winning a few hundred ISO by selling that useless cover and a few HP points (which takes probably takes you dozens and dozens of hours of grinding/shielding and real money if you're one of those whales).

If that gives you pleasure in life, more power to you icon_lol.gif

Not a good analogy. Super Bowl=checks, endorsements, recognition. But interesting thread, totally agree with OP.

Why not have players with maxed Heroes in their own shard? I've seen guys max a hero in days, I can't play with those guys. No fun, we ought to be matched according to roster strength.
  • Agreed, let's match by roster strength. And then you non-maxed players should get **** rewards in return while us maxed players can play around for good rewards.
