Don't Worry Guys, the Nerfs Have Been Announced *In-Game*

So after I saw the big pop-up for the ISO Sale, I thought "Hmmmmm, I wonder if I should buy some ISO to get some more 4Thor covers?"

So:

First I went into my settings, which I change EVERY time I play, cause you know, I need the volume to be *perfect* for each experience.

Then I went to the "Help" button. Because, I haven't been playing this game for 400+ days and I totally check that button all the time when I'm looking for HELP determining if I should buy more covers. I said "Help me game, should I buy some more covers?!?"

Then obviously, I went into the "What's new in MPQ!" section and read all about the 4Thor nerfs and didn't buy any covers for her because she's getting nerfed.

Said no one, ever......

Don't worry, it's announced in the game!

Out of a sense of decency and good business practice, please put up an in-game notice to alert everyone of these changes.

The character balance post went in-game the same day it was posted in the forums. You can find it by selecting the gear icon/Help/"What's New In MPQ."

Unfortunately, it can be hard to find, but thankfully some players do check the FAQ and access the info there. As you'll see in many of the posts in "What's New" we encourage players to visit the forums. We don't have the ability to have working links in the "Message of the Day," but that functionality is on schedule to be added soon.

Edit: By the way, if you have an internet meme that expresses the utmost sarcasm, post it here and I may replace "Said no one ever" with that meme icon_e_biggrin.gif

  • It seems to me this game's in-game announcement operates on the same principle as Twitter so it's not possible to give out detailed explanation of impending doom even if they wanted to. I don't think I've ever seen a block of text more than one page in this game anywhere (and the font is pretty big too) and it obviously takes more than one page to explain the impending changes next week.

How about: The upcoming patch on 3/23 has some significant changes to several characters, including Thor, Iron Fist, Magneto, and Mystique among others. Go to www.d3pforums.com to learn more!

They don't have the ability to post hyperlinks in the message of the day pop-up, so saying nothing is the obvious next-best option.

I feel bad for David, as everyone on this forum loves to shoot the messenger icon_e_sad.gif.

He's not even trying to operate as a Community Manager anymore though - instead of "Well gee, that gorram Help topic is hidden away pretty good, I'll pass that onto the devs since you all seem to think it's important to communicate with our customers." we get "it's too hard to add hyperlinks to news, so we didn't do it - lol!"

He's just a mouthpiece at this stage, and I agree that there's nothing to be gained by taking it out on him.

If any devs want to come down from Olympus and grace us mortals with their presence, then I'll gladly quote most of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman's tirade at them.

Whenever I see the "I feel bad for community manager", I think I have to start posting the Penny Arcade comic about it. Spoilered for language (since, PA, you know?)

  • Sure, never stopped them from posting the link for the sweepstakes though, did it?

They can still post shortened URLs in the daily pop up like what they did with the MPQ sweepstakes.

Why does it have to be a URL. Just list the website and people can copy and paste into their browser. It's not that hard to be honest.

Sorry, I was going for satire. Literally the reasoning David gave for not creating a notice that directs people to the forums was:
...we don't have the ability to have working links in the "Message of the Day,"...

I can understand their position though, getting people to sign up for a competition nets your company a list of names & email addresses which can be sold to advertising companies for big dollars, telling people that there's a sale on your in-game currency encourages spending which generates revenue, but communicating the significant & ultimately disappointing changes you're about to apply that are going to impact a wide cross-section of your playerbase? Well, it just becomes kind of tricky. It's probably best not to mention it.

I wasn't ever visiting these forums back in the days of the Thorverine "funbalancing".
But I saw the message ingame about funbalancing (it was not detailed at all, just an announcement) and that triggered my curiosity and I went here to get the details.
I can only wonder why they didn't repeat a message like that.

It's because their business model is highly dependent upon player ignorance.

They want as few people coming to the forums as possible, because here lies the secrets to things such as transitioning, joining and playing PvE smartly, where to spend HP, etc. Case in point - the majority of their revenue comes from token sales, but it's common knowledge on the forums that buying packs is flushing your money down the toilet. If too many casuals discover the forum, D3 might be forced to devote resources coming up with alternative revenue streams, as every "enlightened" casual is one less fool with his money.

They want as few people knowing about scaling, sharding, MMR, etc as possible. That way, they can spend all their time releasing shiny new toys every two weeks, instead of creating real balance and fixing real long-term issues with the game. And I'm starting to realize why and how they are getting away with it. Simply put, it's because of the Marvel brand combined with the addictive match-3 gameplay. They don't need a long-term vision when the MCU has already outlined the next however many characters they get to release to coincide with the movies, and their marvel.com partnership guarantees new app downloads with every article.

Even so, I'm sure MPQ is similar to many other freemium games, in which much of the revenue is generated from whales. So basically I think that until the whales dry up, there won't be any changes to how D3 operates.

I think this is a Thing that Makes You Go Hmm.

It's quite funny, you know. The introduced DDQ and everyone got all excited and happy, and this very forum was a wellspring of sunshine (with the exception of people like Slidecage). We collectively are capable of not being negative and bitter about absolutely everything. But sometimes, man...they make it really, really hard not to be. icon_evil.gif
  • When you see Josh's roster, you can imagine they won't change their strategy so soon... Rumour has it he spent several 42 and 10 packs to get Prof X covers...

I'm always amazed to see how dumb they think we can be given some of their responses...
  • That is just...incredibly scummy.

Losing respect for D3 by the second.

You still had some respect for them ?

    Hi,

To answer a few questions about the FAQ and in-game messaging:

The in-game FAQ was added back in October, 2014 and the forums were messaged here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17984

The FAQ's "What's New In MPQ" section was added at the beginning of December, 2014.

Yes, an in-game Message of the Day regarding the character updates is on the way and is currently planned to begin on Friday.

Just in time for an entire work week of HP purchasing.

Get ready for the refund requests. It's a shame you'll announce it Friday, peace out on Saturday and Sunday and then patch it on Monday haha.

"But Mr Dent, the plans have been available in the local planning office for the last nine months."

"Oh yes, well as soon as I heard I went straight round to see them, yesterday afternoon. You hadn't exactly gone out of your way to call attention to them, had you? I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything."

"But the plans were on display ..."

"On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them."

    "That's the display department."

    "With a flashlight."

"Ah, well the lights had probably gone."

    "So had the stairs."

"But look, you found the notice didn't you?"

"Yes," said Arthur, "yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'."
