PvP Matching system is an buggy abomination

MPQ Bugs and Technical Issues
When in any PvP mode, the available choices don't seem to be based on any kind of useful pattern. Tiles go 'red' but provide no useful bonus for completing them. If you skip something for low points, your next selection will be against someone with all 160+-level characters.
Matchups should be based on your points and the characters you have available. Please fix this bug.

Options
Red nodes are your opportunity to retaliate against a team that defeated you. There is no penalty for skipping them.
The others are just aspects to get used to. Matchmaking in this game is not a very exact science, and the patterns take some time to learn.
