Found an interesting PvE bug in the current Gauntlet event
I checked a node which had
as essential, and when it took me to character selection step it had loaded my 
into the essential slot.
2* Ms Marvel was still at her unbuffed level, but functioned as Captain Marvel for all other intents and purposes.

So that's what that little patch fixed. It's not so anymore!
