When exactly does your defending team change?

Does it change when you start a battle with that team?

Does it change when you win a battle with that team?

Does it change if you lose the battle or retreat?

Does it take time for the server to update your team or does it happen instantaneously?

    It happens when a battle completes, win or lose. And what do you mean by instantaneous? At the very least it'll take a few nanoseconds, more likely a few milliseconds.

    And note that it doesn't affect retaliations OR anyone who already has you as a possible target.
