MPQ Developer Q&A August 2024 (ANSWERS)
Hey there folks, we've got the answers to your August questions listed below!
- Tensuun [Discord]
Question: Does the team have capacity to decide whether Prowler's black passive, ""I'll Get My Coat"", should create Strike tiles or Protect tiles, and then either update the text or the ability effect to the correct state?
Answer: Devpool: Not sure what you mean here. ""I'll Get My Coat"" only makes strike tiles on its activation. Could you elaborate? - Jebuskow [Reddit]
Question: Is there a way we can get more pve events? Even re skinned old ones or upgrade the difficulty of the original story and campaign ones at this stage would be a great break to the monotony.
Answer: PVE events are something that we are currently looking at. With the current Engine and it's capabilities, even changing/reskinning the currently existing events is a laborious proccess. Everyday we contrinue to learn and grow our proccess which has allowed for us to make some smaller events, but again those take considerable time and effort. Hopefully with the new engine overhaul we can improve the proccess of making events and start pumping out new ones on a more regular basis! - @PiMacleod [Official Forums]
Question: Its a common practice that players will roster a single color cover of a character in order to share a specific team-up with their alliance mates. Do you think we could someday share the specific power of our choice?
Answer: Devpool: Good idea! I'll pass it along to the team! - ReturnalShadow [Reddit]
Question: Many MPQ forumites think that the dev doesn't know how to play MPQ the way that "should be played." Approximately what % of the entire playerbase doesn't know how to play the game the forumites do? For example, min-max resources, chase only meta etc?
Answer: Devpool: I dont think that there should be a way that MPQ "Should be played." There are numerous different playstyles by different users across different tiers. Some chase top placement in PvP, optimizing hits and Shields. Others time their PvE clears down to the second to get the maximum number of points humanly possible. Some use the buffed characters for an event to create interesting in-battle reactions. Some players always use Passive characters and never use abilities. Some use abilities almost exclusively. Some always use their favorite characters no matter how optimal it may be. All of these are valid because these are all ways that players are enjoying their time with the game and should be supported. - AdeptusRevolt [Reddit]
Question: HammerJuggs' Collateral power is not boosted by ability-damage-boosting powers like Okoye's and Apocalypse's. The reason given was that his power was match-based. However, other passive match-based powers are now boosted. Will this be revisited?
Answer: IceIX: Juggernaut (Fear Itself) was designed by the previous developer, so it's difficult to say exactly what they were thinking in implementation of the ability. That being said, when we look at balancing, the ability is actually a bit OP purely by the numbers even without taking outside buffs into account. So that was probably why. Given that Juggernaut is one of the more popular 4-Stars and already accelerates turn win speeds by quite a bit over some other characters, it's unlikely that we'd be giving him outside buffs to that power. - @bigjojo04 [Official Forums]
Question: With more and more costumes being released any chance to add a filter to the roster to show all the characters that have a costume to see which ones you have equipped?
Answer: Devpool: Good Idea! I'll add that to the list of new filters we want to add in. - @Akiramarco [Official Forums]
Question: The question, according to Google Translate, is I would like to know when you will fix the possibility of buying the base colors more than 5 at a time, the possibility of opening the legendary tokens with the cp but with the possibility of opening 50x as is done in other stores
.
Answer: Buying more than 5 All AP Boosts is a surprisingly difficult thing that we assumed would be easy but isn't. It's still on our list of things to do though. As for Legendary Store 50x, we don't currently have plans for this. Even with a confirmation, we would likely run into quite a few players who would accidentally spend this large amount of difficult to gain currency, resulting in a lot of Customer Support headache for both us and the players in question. - fieryboy [Discord]
Question: Will we be able to speed up the animation and clear speed of the events? I love this game but it feels like it takes a bit too much of my time daily.
Answer: IceIX: We looked into this actually, with an option to skip any banners or ability animations. It made the game chaotic and extremely difficult to understand what was going on. There's obviously a good middle ground here (like selectively speeding up some animations like Mindless One Passives), but that's not realistically going to happen till the engine upgrade is complete. - Lazarus429 [Discord]
Question: Could we get a better editing system for teams so the team doesnt move oit of its position in the order when you make a change?
Answer: Devpool: Something I can ask the team to look into! - @Godzillafan67 [Official Forums]
Question: You probably already know the question that I would ask since it's the usual suspect and its most popular response.
Answer: IceIX: Cheesecake is a pie (and delicious), and a hot dog is not a sandwich (it is a taco). - @Formula11 [Official Forums]
Question: PvP supports have really made me think twice about wanting to play that game mode. I got crushed by teams that had so much AP that they stun locked me to death during their first turn. I couldn’t quit. How are the Devs assessing defensive auto wins?
Answer: We've been looking into this among other metrics with the advent of Supports in PVP. The overall results is that for players playing at SCL6 or higher (anything lower and you start to run into people that don't even use them playing against those who do, which messes with the numbers. But overall, introducing Supports increased the average Retreat and Loss rates by about 10%. Which sounds like a lot! except that both of those amount to ~15% of monthly average battle results. So on average, players are winning about... 1.5% less with this implemented. - @DashBC [Official Forums]
Question: Have you thought about lowering the make 1 million matches threshold? Now that I’m done a node without moving any gems, I don’t think that milestone is obtainable.
Answer: More likely that we'd add intermediate milestones instead of removing it. As well, it's still on our endless list of features to update milestones in general. - @entrailbucket [Official Forums]
Question: Supports are still pretty uneven power-level-wise. Any plans to revisit the rest of the bad ones any time soon?
Answer: We do! We are always on the lookout to rebalance and improve! It is definitely on our radar, it's just that a bunch of other things are on our radar and we have to carefully pick and choose what issues to work on and when. So, TL;DR: Soon(tm) - @ThisisClemFandango [Official Forums]
Question: The new deadpool and wolverine vs mpq was advertised as "new". Is this how we are getting pve's from now on or was it purposely misleading?
Answer: Devpool: As I mentioned in an earlier answer, PVE events are very complex and time consuming with the current engine, it doesn't mean we havent tried though! The Deadpool and Wolverine event launched with some dialogue issues that we were unable to correct right away. Our more orignial PVE events will become better and more fleshed out with the engine overhaul! - Nonnel [Discord]
Question: Will we get to puzzle again? W/ Supports + Boosts the game has gone from a match 3 game to a straight button masher. Wins go to who can add boosts the fastest, not match the fastest. It’s the only match 3 game where you don’t have to make a match
Answer: Devpool: Definitely want to puzzle again! It's all about character balance and making sure that anything that we do change doesnt affect the game in ways we dont want it to. We are working on a big numbers change that is in the works but I can't say any more than that. - BlueLion [Reddit]
Question: Seeing as how there was a mathematical error with the scoring for the Omega Red community challenge, are there plans on running it again so the player base has a fair shot at winning that space stone?
Answer: IceIX: We'd rather run new Challenges than rerun old ones. Doesn't mean that the Space Stone may not pop up again, just that it won't likely be as part of an Omega Red event. - A-Rock [Reddit]
Question: When will you handle the massive QoL text problems in MPQ? Microsized walls of text for power explanations, quest reqs you can't even fit on the screen chopping words off, all with no option to expand or popout or change the font size.
Answer: Devpool: It's definitely an issue, but unfortunately one that doesnt have an easy solution with the current engine. Really looking forward to the engine overhaul so we can start implementing QoL changes! - manhope.mch@ [Reddit]
Question: Hello. Will you adjust regional prices when a sale is announced on Google Play Store? For example, 100% hp bonuses and the price is increased by 100%.
Answer: IceIX: Not sure what you mean by this one. We rarely adjust regional pricing (last time was January 2022), so it's not a thing that we adjust prices with sales. So not sure why you'd be seeing a price change when a sale itself is run. - PumpyJumpy [Discord]
Question: are there any plans to add the ability to play on one account in steam and the mobile version?
Answer: Planned, yes. It's not directly related to the engine update, but we'd have to reimplement a link in both this version and the redone engine version, and it's not a super simple implementation. So yes, but stay tuned. In the near term though, we can do that manually for you, just contact CS and they'll walk you through it! - Amosmj [Reddit]
Question: The players had a strong reaction to the Deathlock vs Annihulis fight the the Welcone the Shield event. Can you talk about why that match up happened and any thought on why it won’t change or how it will change going forward?
Answer: The opponent selection for the 1v1 fights are done with a couple of parameters in mind. Sometimes it is done with theming in mind, sometimes it's a match up we think will be interesting. However, picking the opponent for a 1v1 is actually pretty difficult as this game is really designed as a 3v3. this throws alot of potential for human error when making this kind of mission, and while we do strive to pick the best character for a matchup sometimes issues of this nature slip through. - @Anonymous [Official Forums]
Question: Can we please modify boss events where the 20 players that are in an alliance be locked for the entire duration of the event? Too many times have t10 alliances swapped players in and out and it's not fair to the alliances that have played together.
Answer: This is something that we have taken notice of and are working on a fix. However these systems are extremely complex and it will take some time to work on and implement a solution. Also, while this is something that players have been doing intentionally, it can also be done accidentally. Which makes enforcing a ban or some other repercussion difficult without creating false positives. In the mean time, we plan on changing Alliance top end tiers in a minor way to help mitigate the issue - SaintSean117 [Discord]
Question: As a new player, I'd find it really helpful to be able to sort your inbox differently rather than just by cover expiry date. Can we change it so they can be sorted alphabetically for example?
Answer: Devpool: Not something we've thought about but I like it! I'll pass it to the team! - @_Trash Panda [Official Forums]
Question: Please add: ability to move around saved teams + save specific supports to saved teams + pick 3 saved teams overwrite pick 2 nodes.
Answer: Devpool: These are all neat ideas and i would love to see them in game. however UI changes of any kind are currenlty very time consuming and complex tasks. Things will be alot eaiser to change and implement with the engine overhaul. - Discord: Pengugaming001.ttv [Discord]
Question: When is the family matters legendary token coming back?
Answer: Should be coming up again sometime this year! - Zifnab0 [Discord]
Question: Will there ever be any changes or updates to Lightning Rounds? Like changing the required characters, a different buff list, or adjusting the current buff? The featured 3's receive a 50% buff, ascended those 3.5's at level 550 are buffed to 825.
Answer: Currently there have not been any internal discussions regarding changing the Lightning rounds. Doesn't mean there wont be in the future, just not in this moment - SnooCupcakes2289 [Reddit]
Question: when are they going to show something of the new engine? i mean images and not text.
.
Answer: IceIX: The overall goal for the engine update for day one is to have it be largely invisible to the end user so that if you weren't clued in, you wouldn't even notice a change. So a lot of the dev is going into creating the engine so that it's way more flexible on the back end, but "normal" on the front end. - Pwuz [Discord]
Question: I’m enjoying the addition of Supports in PvP, but it sure would be nice to know which of my teams retaliations were coming from. Is there anyway to also show what my team was the opponent defeated to get into my retaliation queue?
Answer: Interesting, we'll add this to the list for the team to look into! - @trewiltrewil [Official Forums]
Question: It seems from forum convos that a lot of the group that dislikes supports in PVP seems to be related to the T1/T0 edge cases. Has the dev team ever considered implementing a max damage per turn to prevent T0 wins?
Answer: Devpool: I dont think we have though of a max damage per turn as that would be limiting to player agency. We are putting in some thought towards T0/T1 wins but I currently can't say more than that - @Cam30 [Official Forums]
Question: Is there any chance Boss Rush will come back to the game? I would really enjoy the challenge!
Answer: Possibly! we are looking at adding some more challenging options for players but again we can't say much more than that. - @Bzhai [Official Forums]
Question: Why aren't the latest 3-stars getting featured in events as often as their 5-star counterparts? Dilution among 3-stars is becoming a problem and the low bonus rate for heroic and standard tokens are not helping either.
Answer: Dilution is alway going to be a problem and we are always going to try and implement new ways to combat it. outside of that we currently have 3-stars featured in thier own PVP release event, they are then added into the rotating queue of 3-stars for PVP and PVE rewards. IceIX: As well, once they're favoriteable, nearly all tokens give Shards for 3-Star characters, so it becomes a pretty straightforward way of targeting those characters in particular in a measured fashion. It's not a silver bullet, but is a solid help. - @leviticuschoms [Official Forums]
Question: What can I do to convince y'all to do more rebalances? tbh, they're more exciting than most new characters and don't hinge on the new engine!
Answer: Devpool: Dont have to convince me! Rebalances are currently in the works and we dont see any reason to stop - @turtlerad17 [Official Forums]
Question: Can you put the number of completed clears visibly on the PVE nodes while on the current PVE round map? This way we don’t have to click on each individual node to check how many clears we have done and potentially miss some of the clears.
Answer: That would take some UI design. its a feature we can take a look at when we have the engine overhaul - @DyingLegend [Official Forums]
Question: How we looking on the mysterious changes to the ISO economy and roster slots? Since ascension was introduced its been a constant struggle to gain enough ISO and keep up with constant new heroes. I think ISO gains should scale w/ overall roster power.
Answer: ISO Economy is something we are definitely looking at. - @Zhreveya [Official Forums]
Question: What has happened to PVP MMR recently (bar the ridiculous inclusion of supports)? I am regularly facing teams 30/35/40 levels above my highest level character.
Answer: Devpool: While we have done some investigation into MMR I can confidently say we have made no changes to the current MMR system - RizPrime [Discord]
Question: Any chance of removing the 'Buy anything from the Resources Shop' daily quest? Having to spend premium or real-life currency to complete this quest doesn't feel fair.
Answer: Devpool: I'm not against the idea. We have been talking internally about adding to milestones. I'll add that to the discussion. - @CASSIDYFROST [Official Forums]
Question: With all the multiverse storytelling currently happening in the MCU, is there any way this could be sort of adapted into the game so we can create teams with copies of the same character? 3 Loki, 3 Emma Frost, 3 Deadpool, 3 Wolverine...
Answer: Devpool: I really like it. ill add it to the list of ideas for future events - @phillsam [Official Forums]
Question: Will we still have a store specifically for costumes that aren't just in vaults or with real money? It could be like the Snap variants, like 3 costumes in the store per day and updated with 3 other random ones, each with its own value…
Answer: Something we are for sure thinking about! - @Azumi [MPQ]
Question: Is there any chance that feeders could become more visible in the game? When I want to roster or champ a particular 5*, I'd really like to see which 4* I ought to roster and champ to help get there.
Answer: Devpool: This is another cool UI design that I like. Another idea to explore after the overhaul! - @Daredevil217 [Official Forums]
Question: Any chance you are looking at nerfing Leap Frog? This is the problem with supports in general. I probably need to chase it but they take SO long to level that a much needed nerf means a year of wasted resources.
Answer: Devpool: I'm not going to say that we will never nerf something because it is not true. However, it is one of our last options when attempting to rebalance the game. - @bluewolf19 [Official Forums]
Question: Is there any thought to modifying Simulator PVP to reduce the meta team usage? One idea: create a 6th node and set 3 of them as open to any, 3 with restricted affiliations. This would encourage creative/off-meta team use, I think.
Answer: We are always on the lookout to mess with the games meta and encourage creative team compositions! Thanks for the idea!

The meme of "maybe with the new engine update" lives on!

Thank you so much for taking the time to do these Q&As. They really get me excited for the future of the game. If I bought a Stark, could you then hire another developer to hasten the arrival of the revamped game engine? Can't come soon enough!!
1 -
Pretty sure they meant the passive part of "I'll get my coat" it say creates enemy protects at battle start but create strikes.
3 -
gutted there wasn't a never say never this month, but still fairly big on the vague.
3 -
There was a time when I was excited to read these and get a sense of direction for MPQ and maybe enjoy a nugget of things to come. I appreciate that they still do this, but feels like there were 35 questions "We can't do much about anything until the new engine". And it's a real bummer knowing that the goal posts for that keeps moving.
And the changes that don't hinge on the engine aren't a priority. making iso8 more available, 3* dilution being addressed? rebalances? fresh lightning rounds? smooth out intro fights (spider silk), maybe a new loading screen, readability, milestones. Even the Deadpool celebration was completely routine and overhyped.
As a long time player and consumer, this game is stale - and getting directionless. Matches take longer than ever, I'm feeling pushed out of PVP, and my patience for basic UI/UX improvements is about done.

Couldn't agree more, patience is running thin

Just going to throw this out…..the devs restructured the Heroic boss rewards slightly (where rank is not as important) and added Support shards to PvP and they didn’t need a new game engine to do it.

Can someone make a “Magic ISO-8 Ball…” with the following responses…
“Never say never!”
“Not until the new engine”
“Something to consider…”
“Great idea! I’ll pass it along to the team!”
“That’s not something we’re considering at this time”
“It’s something we’re thinking about”
“Ask again later…”

In the mean time, we plan on changing Alliance top end tiers in a minor way to help mitigate the issue
You did the opposite, you probably multiplied it by 250% if not more.
top10 alliances hits 35.2-36.4 millions points, whereas top 25 (used to) drop to 31 millions, that's a LOT of points available to swap around if necessary to get "one more alliance" in that threshold

I've been playing MPQ since the 2nd month it existed, every single day, almost 11 years now.
If you're waiting on the devs to do something to make the game less stale, you're going to be waiting forever. That's not even a knock on them, at this point. This game is what it is.
If you're bored, you can try doing something different to make it more exciting for you, or...well, there's no shame in walking away from something that's meant to be fun, when you no longer find it fun.

Players ask the same questions every month.
Just this month there was:
changes to UI
new events
buying more than 5 boosts
banners and animations
saved teams
inbox cover sorting
node counters
showing ascension and feeders in game
adding new nodes to existing events
the actual new game engine itselfIf the answer has been consistent every month it's asked, what would you propose the devs answer other then "we're working on the new game engine to be able to make these changes"?
Throw in a couple loaded questions that illicit only PR type responses, and you're left with only a few real questions about specific character abilities or thought process behind certain designs or ideas that can be answered in a meaningful way.
And when the devs, purposefully or not, don't answer a question on a certain topic, then they get called out for "not answering the tough questions". As a community, we're giving them almost no incentive to continue this community outreach.

That is why I gave up really caring about boss events years ago. When they can abuse the system why even play
I get my max or so and quit

If they wanted to make community outreach feel better then they should set up some kind of dashboard for the new game engine. Lay out the progress (estimated) and what kind of things they are planning to do when they have it in place. Maybe list their priorities in ranges (high, middle, low).
LIke why not be forthright and honest? It would save us all a lot of time with submitting questions that all get the same answer.
Yeah...people ask the same questions over and over and get the same answer over and over. And so we get cynical and make jokes. They are completely able to decide to do this all differently. And even if they need to change priorities, or drop them, or whatever at least they could be clear with us about things they are working on via a standing post that we could reference if we wanted.
Yeah, I know... This will never happen. But it would be nice.

Then again, they would simply be putting additional pressure on themselves. They will already have corporate dictated timeframes/goals/targets to adhere to, adding fan based ones as well sounds pretty wearisome. And fans can sometimes be MUCH worst than corporate overlords.

Maybe I'm wrong but I fail to believe that once you get down to say the bottom 100 players in the group of 25 top alliances, that they could all play as optimally as the ones at the top but were stopping because the rewards didn't seem worth it. People develop habits and being able to sit hitting all the flips instantly as the boss opens, controlling all the people do that, etc requires people who have very specific schedules.
I am not convinced that there are that many people past the top 500 that do this, not even past the top 200 who were fighting for T10 before.
I suspect that T25 will be plenty of high reward slots to reduce the incentives to exploit the systems.

Mod mode off
I agree with @Theghouse above. The issue with putting up a dashboard for the game engine replacement is, I'd imagine, a bit too close to setting expectations that may critically affect players choices in the short term. Example: if I'm a bit bored of the game and I know somethings coming in 6 months, I may decide to take a rest and come back and see the shiny new events in a while. Or not buy the VIP for a while. Player engagement is really important and those that walk away because 6 months is too long may never come back. The other thing is it invites armchair criticism about pace, delays etc. If you hit the date, nobody notices or gets excited. If you miss one: 🔥 and disappointment. The feeders being obvious examples of this. I'm genuinely curious as to whether this is a parallel build and migration to the new engine or an incremental replacement of modules. I expect the former, and know from experience the number of niggles, edge cases and bugs that come out of the woodwork at the last minute, so it's really important that everything is tested to within an inch of its life. Because if it falls over, the impact on the game could be very bad indeed.Stating the obvious, this engine overhaul is complex, risky and expensive in terms of dev time. They're not doing it for fun, just to make the game as good as it can be and allow them to create a better game for everyone. I don't think they need any more pressure to do that.
4 -
Honestly, they could make these things better by just ignoring questions they've already answered, or keeping some sort of FAQ that got updated every month.

LOL, you are absolutely not the only one feeling this!
Among competitive players with some level of tenure, at least the ones I've spoken to, over a period of many years, this isn't JUST a majority of players, this is the attitude of probably 95% of them, if not more.
I'll go further -- if you're a competitive player with some amount of tenure, and you DON'T think this, you're weird and other folks will think there's something wrong with you.
