Event Variety

I love the attention the devs are paying to the Events, eliminating the unnecessary waiting times for the "charge"-type events. Those events are now just "Play X or more battles" at your own time for full progression rewards, while having some extra battles if you're competitive, perfectionist, etc.

Another common type of events is "ladder" - a PvE event, when you have to beat one node to access the next one. Many of such events were listed in the Release Notes in the similar batch as "charge"-type events with no further clarification.

We also have some unique event mappings. For now I have 2 examples:

  1. Challenge of the Courts. The next node's "charge" counter starts only after you clear the previous node.
  • As a player, I hate that approach, because it leaves little room for mistakes.
  • As an observer, I love it. It's challenging yet rewarding. I also like that you can calculate the right time to join the event, and finish it with the minimum of fights and the full rewards. It's very possible, I did it several times.
  1. You Have Found an Entrance, when the next step on the "ladder" is based on your actions. I love this format a lot.
It would map really well for Lost Caverns of Ixalan, but instead we got a replication of the Into the Wilds of Eldraine (which could also make use of this format).

The Coalition Events should be, in my opinion, Standard PvP (all Standard sets) or Legacy PvE (all sets).

If you choose to rerun a Legacy PvP Coalition Event, either make it Block-restricted (a minor problem for vets with full collections), or make it Rarity-restricted.

I also wouldn't be mad if I never saw Coalition Legacy PvP events again.

I forgot to share that I hate the Coalition Standard PvP events, because they are very boring.

I think that the Event Support feature is a step into the direction to diversify the events, but it's not enough.

I feel like there shouldn't only be a boon for complying with the event node rules, but also a bane for not doing so.

It feels like shooting myself in the foot, but that's what's needed for the game to stay exciting.

Another idea: change the objective based on the player's rank.
For example, if a Platinum player is required to summon 10 Vampires for an objective, the number would be lower for other Tiers: 3 (Bronze) -> 5 (Silver) -> 7 (Gold) -> 10 (Platinum).

I hope WebCore will have the time to look into this a some point.

Sadly, I’m done trying to get any traction on this issue. Over the years I have simply stopped caring, because Oktagon just didn’t move an inch.

@Asylamb - I hope you will accomplish something, though I do not think WebCore should spend time on event support as that is (or at least has been) dead end solution.

YFAE always felt like a lazy implementation of the idea... they tried to give it a little flavor of exploring a map by letting you take branching paths, but it doesn't feel like that at all, to me. Imagine if it had actually displayed a branching map on the screen. That would have been cool!

The funny thing about computer code is that you can do literally everything with it.. you don't have to implement everything in the laziest way possible, But often that's what we get in this game: not "What's the best implementation of this idea", but "How can we smoosh this idea into the limited number of concepts that already exist in it?". That's why we ended up with the awful, awful execution of the "Venture Into The Dungeon" mechanic that we did. Easyness of use was about the furthest thing from the mind of whoever was designing that mechanic, and so it barely saw any play at all.

I've been meaning to say something about Avacyn's Madness, and this seems like a good thread to put it in.

Avacyn's Madness (and the other 'Boss Health mechanic' event, RotGP) was conspicuously left out of the list of updated events in the 6.5.0 release. If you were to ask players what they think of Avacyn's Madness, they'd probably say they hate it, so maybe it's been completely mothballed. That would be a shame, I think the reason it's reviled is largely because of the Boss Health mechanic, and if that were to be removed, there's actually a PvE event with a lot of variety in there. Levels 3-3, 4-3 and 5-1 are all challenging in different ways, but none of those challenging objectives prohibits you from playing any high rarity cards or makes you durdle around waiting for the objectives to complete.

Maybe some players don't like the fact that AM has 5 nodes, and so, even if it gave all the node charges up front, it'd be too many games to play? Fine, then just cut the first 2 nodes! The first node of a PvE event is usually a waste of time anyway, they all have a power level around Origins Story Mode.

RotGP... I'm not so bothered about. You can mothball that one if you like ^_^

I'd say that "boss health" events like AM and RotGP are the worse versions of the similar events without a boss to kill, like "Face the Hydra" and the newly introduced "Survivors of the Tribes". In general, it's just "charge" and "ladder" combined.

As for the "dungeon" type, I still feel like it has a lot of potential.

Another type of the events I forgot to mention is the "Duels Decks". Very promising and very underused.
Zendikar vs Eldrazi is decent from both mechanical and lore perspective.
Daxos vs Kalemne is decent from mechanical perspective, but is lacking from the lore perspective. If in ZvE you kinda knew who to root for, Daxos and Kalemne are both random characters.

I think it was a missed opportunity to make a new Duel Decks event for the recent Dominaria block (DOM to MOM), smth like Phyrexia vs Multiverse. With a new custom PW for Phyrexia (inspired from a Legendary Phyrexian creature, like Atraxa or even Mishra) and either a random PW from the past (like Aminatou), or a custom PW with colors we haven't had yet in a PW.
Urza vs Mishra is another possibility.
