Do we only play against our bracketed opponents?

I was of the assumption that in a PVP event with 500 players, you only play against those other 499 players for the event.

I noticed something last night which took me by surprise. It was the Cage Match event about 5 hours to the end of the event.
I was rank #14 with about 740 points. I was defeated by an opponent who had 780 points but I could not find him in the top #15 ranks of my bracket.

I tried refreshing the list and closing the game for about 20 minutes to watch if the list refreshes but this opponent did not show up on the rankings. Clearly not a part of the 500 player bracket.

Has it always been like this? And if so, are we open to attack the whole pool of players on MPQ?

    Title question: no.
Post questions: yes, and yes, but more like your match-making ranking (MMR) pool, which may be indeed very wide especially between 700 and 900 points (open gates).
  • Oh i see. So are brackets of players random or are we put into groups of similar strength?

We wish it was roster strength. No, MMR is mostly determined by the amount of days you play (same for bracketing, but bracketing also looks at many other factors - we don't know all of them) and most of all your win/loss ratio (including defensive wins/losses).
But after crossing 700 pts in a tourney you get a wider circle of opponents which may get narrower again after breaching 900.
  • I swear the game prefers someone in your bracket if they are supposed to be in your MMR matchup range. Granted with all the craziness of MMR that actually doesn't happen very often, but I've had events where 5 out of 8 guys I can hit is someone in my bracket and that seems too unlikely by just sheer chance.
