I have been playing MPQ for a few months now. I have the game pretty much figured out by now. I understand things like rubberbanding, MMR, tanking and such. However, there are still a couple things I am unclear on. I keep hearing certain terms and I am unable to find a detailed explanation as to what they mean exactly. I have looked around the forum and searched the internet but still cant find what I'm looking for. I even asked a few other players, but they were not sure. So I figured I'd post here and just ask. Also, new gamers might want to know too, so they can just read it here.

1)... What is "bracketing" and how does it work?

2)... What is "scaling" and how does it work?

I think I have an idea, but I would like to know for sure. I know what a bracket is, the leader board you placed on with other players in an event, but how is it decided? Also I think scaling has to do with the level your opponents are at, but not sure how it works. If someone could give me some help with my 2 questions I'd really appreciate it a lot. I'd like as much detail as possible, but at the same time use the K.I.S.S. method, ( Keep It Short & Simple ), so I or anyone else reading it can understand it. I have heard both terms used in multiple contexts so it's difficult to get a proper understanding.
thanks for any help, JJ.

Your "bracket" in any given event is the group of players that you're ranked against as an individual.

Typical PVP events have 500-player brackets, which means that your individual placement depends on your point total in relation to these other 499 players who appear on your leaderboard. Simulator's main event (the two-node page) has 1000-player brackets, while its current subevents have 200-player brackets. This means that you're only competing within that fixed group of 1000 players for the main-event rewards (BP covers, the IW cover, and the misc. HP & Iso), and you're competing against an independent group of 200 players for sub-event placement rewards.

Others can explain scaling much more eloquently than I can. icon_e_biggrin.gif

People talk about bracketing lately cause it got changed recently. Before it was 100% first come first served. So the first 500 to join we're all in one bracket, then next 500 and on and on. Apparently in order to ease the load on their servers D3 has implemented something they call "sharding". At the base what this does is allow for multiple brackets to be open and filling simultaneously, but they have added logic on top of the time based system to group newer players with each other and therefore also the more veteran players with each other. I think this is now happening in both pvp and pve although the pvp "death bracket" top 10s are more noticeable.

As for scaling, like HM I can't claim to know what is going on. Basically the more you win (in pve) the more your scaling goes up. If you win with full health or higher than entering from healing, then your scaling might go up faster. If you lose some guys or fully wipe your scaling might go down. Then there's community scaling which is generally per node and it ratchets up the difficulty as more and more people beat it. The scaling formulas seem to be ever-changing so there's not much more to say about it.
