Favorite Comic Cover

After thinking it over in the 3 star Gwen thread I feel like it would be interesting to see what everyone's favorite comic cover is. Which art stands out to you most among those in game? Are there any variant covers they did for events or holidays you happen to prefer or miss? And does your favorite comic cover match your favorite character?

While 5 star Gwenom's comic is great I think 5 star Riri still stands as my favorite despite not even having her. Alongside her I love 4 star Elektra's cover and Jessica Jones' cover. Unlike Riri, I actually use those two.

I can relate to that so much. I've spoken about it before but I care deeply for my 5 star Green Goblin. So much so I managed to find the exact cover they used for PQ. Plan to get a frame for it. Managed to get Lethal Protector 1 for 4 star Venom as well alongside it.

And honestly. It's hard not to love Scarlet Witch 5 star too. SW always gets great covers.

I would love to see even more variants, still waiting for the Todd McFarlane covers, his Spidey is just iconic:

His Spidey might be iconic but have you ever read that issue? My god the man cannot write Spider-Man!!!

I am still awaiting the Rob Liefeld collection!

My favourite cover is probably the Jon J Muth Havok one.

I would looove if they did various collections. I think the closest we got was one time a bunch were made into Skottie Young covers.

But imagine a week of all Liefeld covers! Then all Kirby. Then all Skottie Young. Then all Romita. Then all Alex Ross.

That would be great! George Perez I know is decently represented but I would be pretty happy with a week of him. Alan Davis also (can we please have Captain Britain? Not Betsy...)

I guess we do have the all 4 of the Jim Lee X-Men #1 variants in game which is a sort of mini collection of itself.

Read it many times as it was one of my first Spidey comics :)
Regardless of the content, the McFarlane covers are pretty great and seeing none of them in this game, makes me wonder if there's some rights issue?

Not sure over what. Todd was fully work for hire at that point (if we ever get Joe Fixit then I would want Todd's version 100%) so Marvel would own all of that artwork. I guess there might be bad blood that has lingered but it is 505 who choose the covers to use, not Marvel but I guess they could potentially say some are off limits. Seems a long time to hold a grudge though. I guess Todd can be a bit litigious but even that seems to have calmed down after all these years. Maybe it is a case that somebody doesn't like Todd's artwork? John Romita Sr. hated it and couldn't believe Marvel didn't want him to "fix it", lol!

I could be wrong and just missed it but we don't seem to have anything by Art Adams, Frank Miller, David Mazucchelli, Marshall Rogers, Ron Lim, Michael Golden, Mark D Bright, any of the Kubert's (?) - Marc Silvestri? Don't think so? No Dave Cockram either. We have Dave!

So Todd is in plenty of good company there.

    4* Carnage.
One of the only two MPQ covers I am aware of that features my favorite artist - Mark Bagley. (the other cover being 4* Venom)
I loved his work on Amazing Spidey and LOVE his take on Carnage.
I'm hoping if we eventually get some Thunderbolts in-game that we can see more of his stuff, too.

You can't get much more of a Marvel artist than Mark Bagley - he won the Marvel Try out Book contest! B)

I find it curious how there are very few classic covers used in game. There are certainly a couple, like Avengers #57 and Amazing Fantasy #15 come to mind, but how is there no Journey Into Mystery #83, Captain America #100, Silver Surfer #1 by Buscema, Wolverine #1 by Miller, etc? I'd personally get a lot more excited for the ability to customize my covers than I would costumes any day.

Actually, now that I think about it, if I could have any Wolverine cover in the game...

That is a a fantastic cover and very much the one I was thinking of from Todd and Hulk.

It says Hulk but this is a picture of Wolverine

Hulk is reflected in Wolverines claws. This is a common trope in the Hulk v Wolverine battles over time.

It shows up often in the Marvel 90s era.

It was the 1980s and so it was legally mandated that if Wolverine was in your comic book for even 1 panel then he must dominate the entire cover (Note: this was different to the 90s where it was legally mandated that Wolverine must be in your comic book no matter what).

I should also add that issue is worth reading alone just for Rogue's hilarious hairdo! Todd did like his big hair! 😀

Still a lot of classic covers or great artists that aren't in this game, but I can see why Marvel prefers to push recent comics... at least it works for me as I've picked up a few newer issues.

It takes a lot to get me to read new comics.
The newest comic I have read was Punisher Max and that is already pretty old.

All the things Marvel is trying to do to spike readership now is actually driving old customers away.
For every Miles Morales or a Kamala Khan there are seemingly endless gender swaps that fail.

I wish they would sort of reset back to what they were doing in the 80s. But that’s probably not going to happen since Disney is driving the narrative of this stuff now.
