So, Marvel Snap. (Prompt to Ian: Fire up the game and find out what your collection level is; that's the number in the green box right under your avatar. I'll ask for it in a bit.)

Ian, you sound like a guy who has played some games in the past, including analog board and card games. I think the developers of Marvel Snap are working under the assumption that people who are new to the game are new to GAMES (period). The upshot of this is that while the beginning of the game is very well-suited to new players, it might seem too simple to "gamers."

Here was a comment I made to my MPQ alliance the day after I tried Marvel Snap the first time: "I like it so far, but I'm uncertain how much depth there can be. Maybe I just haven't progressed far enough." Maybe you feel the same way, Ian.

My first question to you, Ian, is: What is your collection level? (If the answer is greater than 500, then the rest of this probably won't matter to you. But maybe it will interest somebody else.)

Though it isn't made very clear in the game itself, there are multiple "series" of cards that players pull from. After the starter cards that you acquire on the collection level track (like Jessica Jones, Wolfsbane, and Odin), you enter the first series of cards. Your pulls will be random, but they will all come from the same series of cards, and different players will gather the cards in this series at different times. By the time you reach collection level 214, you will have completed the first series of cards. The second series will then last up to level 474.

While the cards in the first series have fairly basic effects and include some tech cards (like Enchantress shutting down all "ongoing" effects), the cards in the second series become a little more varied and somewhat more complex. There are also some hard counters to earlier archetypes: in the first series of cards, Ka-Zar is quite strong, but in the second series you get Killmonger, which shuts down that deck.

And then you enter the largest group of cards, Series 3, which makes various archetypes more consistent and powerful. The cards in this series come more slowly, so there's a real sense of not knowing exactly which cards your opponent may have in their deck (though the MMR does try to match you with people near your level).

I find that there is a lot of variety and depth to the game once you get well into the second series of cards. There are various archetypes in the game (ongoing, on reveal, destroy, discard, and movement) plus decks that are enabled by specific cards (like The Infinaut, Sera, and Patriot).

And this doesn't even take into account the snap mechanic, which brings poker-like stakes to each game (and makes it less painful to retreat if you get a bad draw).

Anyway, I've been finding the easy deckbuilding and quick gameplay leading to a "one more time" feeling that (as I said last week) is coming dangerously close to eating into my MPQ time.

curious what could make your MPQ Christmas dreams come true, what character(s) would get in your stockings? and if there is no show this week - have a great Christmas and break.

Frequent listener - but miss a show every now and then. Did your local Popeye's ever reopen?
