First time spending HP for a cover

edited May 2014 in MPQ Tips and Guides
Finally, after having enough roster slots and weeks of farming HP, I've gotten my first 1250 HP to spend on a cover. If you were in my position, where would you spend it on?

My notable characters are:

L105 Hulk 5/1/4
L102 LCap 2/4/4
L102 LThor 2/4/4
L89 Pun 3/3/3
L64 Patch 4/0/2
L64 CMags 3/2/2

4 max 2* of obw/thor/cstorm/wolvie

Currently, I'm considering to purchase either LThor Yellow to make him higher leveled, or Pun Green to have him at L102. Still torn between the two so I would appreciate any comments you may have. Also, if you have other suggestions aside from the two I have already mentioned, I'd like to hear your view as well.

Thanks in advance.

Lthor is a good choice, for yellow especially since it generates more tiles...

But for me, I will definitely choose to purchase the last red or blue cover for Lcap. Having that fifth blue or red cover fundamentally changes Lcap, making him into the king of pve. Being able to clear CD tiles makes him very useful in pve. My preference is in blue, as blue stun delays the opponent, and leave behind a huge protect tile.

My Lcap is often the last character standing, but I can still win as the protect tile prevents AI match dmg, and the stun delays them further.

While Lthor is good, having that few extra yellow tiles doesn't change his playing style that much. Whereas for Lcap, being able to overwrite ANY tile makes him a formidable opponent (in pve at least).

Don't get pun green unless you are planning to get 2 green covers. At 5 green he gives 3 strike tiles, but 4 green only 2.
  • i would advice against purchasing cover with HP.

Save the HP for shielding/ purchasing new cover slot.

There will be a lot new characters coming your way.

Something to think about is that when the next tournament hits offering a character as a reward, you're gonna get 3 covers of that char if you place in top 10. This means that covering up LT/LazyCap isn't that great since once they're offered as rewards, you would have had max covers anyways. By this logic it makes more sense to cover Punisher or something since you would get 3/4/3, which means after a tournament you get exactly enough covers to max out the character.

I personally wouldn't recommend spending HP on covers: shields/roster slots are generally a better investment.
  • In your situation, I'd echo what others here are saying. You'll get more value for your hero points by saving them for shields. I generally think having a hero point reserve is better than any specific cover, so if you're just buying one cover and wiping out your reserve, it doesn't make much sense since then you can no longer buy shields if you need them.

    But for future referemce -
L105 Hulk 5/1/4 - there's a black daily reward, and red is useful, but better to wait on
    L102 LCap 2/4/4
    L102 LThor 2/4/4
L89 Pun 3/3/3 - his covers are offered somewhat frequently for a rare. He's a jack of all trades. Probably better to wait.
    L64 Patch 4/0/2 - he's a solid character
L64 CMags 3/2/2 - there's a blue daily reward, but otherwise he's a good candidate as long as they don't nerf him. his covers are quite rare

So of those, if you do spend on covers at some point in the future, CMags, Lazy Thor, Patch / Lazy Cap, Punisher in that order.

Punisher is your best covered 3-star so it's tempting to tell you (if you do buy covers in the future) to put it into him, but in practice, you need at least two high level 3-stars to be competitive these days, so I'd lean more towards CMags or Lazy Thor.

Cmags is strong on Offense / board manipulation, weak on D. Thor is strong from a raw damage perspective, and does okay on D.

But at this point, I'll reiterate that having a hero point reserve is more important than having any one cover.
  • Unless you can reliably get top 10 + top 100 alliance in PvP events I don't think waiting for a cover to be offered in PvP is a great idea, because you could be waiting for a long time and then not even win, especially if it's someone who is likely to be contested like Thor.

In terms of value, Magneto blue is the highest in the game, but it seems like a nerf on him is likely. Thor's yellow and Punisher's green are both good choices otherwise. I'd consider upgrading Magneto only if you can get to 5 blue, because 5 blue is a huge power upgrade over 4, so if you're going to risk your HP against a likely nerf, risk only at where you can hit 5 blue covers.
  • Thanks you for sharing all your views. So, here's what I've concluded for myself so far: I'll spend the HP for a specific cover only if I have more than enough, or 'excess' might be a more proper term. For now, I have gathered 1450 HP, but decided to hold on to it for shielding and future cover slots. I have 36 slots, 2 of which are disposable and next slot costs 500 HP. For shielding, I generally use shield only when the cover rewards are the ones that I want (unfortunately, so does everyone else), which is not very often. So I'm thinking that about 1000 HP reserve would be enough for shielding and roster slot purposes. I'll wait until I reach the 2000+ mark before using the HP on a cover. Actually, impatience is kind of settling in on me that's why I wanted to buy a cover. Since the recent changes to the game, it's been very difficult for someone with my roster to consistently place top 10 in PVPs anymore. So it's usually just top 25 for me, or worse, top 50 if cover reward is heavily contested. Getting 3 cover rewards in PVPs now is highly unlikely for me.

    also...

I do not see a black Hulk in the daily rewards list provided in this forum. The green, I already got.
  • I've always espoused buying covers for elite characters you know you will use. Especially if that single cover can dramatically increase their effectiveness.

So buy that 5th cover of black Hulk or yellow LT and have no regrets.

My bad. I had it confused with the 3000 pt reward from Season 1. In that case, I would probably get the red hulk cover if you absolutely want to spend HP now [but again, I would hold off if that's the only HP you have and you don't plan on spending money], since you're statistically more likely to pull a red OR a black cover than two red covers in a row. That would get you to 5/2/4, which also is a good place to be for the next time an event with hulk rewards come along. You'd then potentially be able to fill him out to 5/3/5, possibly with a disposable green cover.

No worries. icon_e_biggrin.gif Your inputs and everyone else's are very much appreciated as it helps me continue to improve in this game.
