Best way to obtain 3* covers as a casual F2P player
So, I have maxed 3 of my 2*s(Thor, MNgneto, and aWolv with lv 73 Ares and lv 62 OBW) recently and now in the beginning of the 2* to 3* transition stage. However, after the nerf in the cover reward system, I find it extremely slow and difficult to obtain enough 3* covers of a single character to do anything useful with them. I can win one or maybe two 3* cover in events if I push hard enough but I've never been a hardcore player plus the timezone is terrible/I'm pretty busy recently, so most times I place between 100~200. Is there any way to get them at a better rate, or is it supposed to work like that?(I have no objections for that if it is, I'll just keep playing) I can't and am not willing to spend too much more of my productive time into the game, but I'll consider dropping a few bucks(The problem is, my most covered 3* needs 7 more covers and that costs an Asgard Treasure on sale- far exceeds 'a few bucks')on covers if I have to.
The 3* covers I have are:
Lazy Shieldbro, lv 56, capped
The Hulk, lv 52, max lv 64
GSBW, lv 28, capped
The Hood, lv 21, max lv 25
Ragnarok, lv 18, capped
Spidey, lv 18, capped
LT, lv 15, max lv 18(I know he's really good but I'm never going to use him ever. I hate him.)
wPatch, lv 15, max lv 18
And single covers for BP, DD, HT, IM40, Cmags, Phylocke and Punisher.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: I have about 6k iso stocked and am part of an active 20-man alliance in case you need to know.

I know exactly what you mean. My roster is a little stronger than yours but I still acquire 3* at a super slow rate (2% chance at a featured hero is nonsense I think) and I have terrible terrible luck with tokens. The only way I seem to get 3* is to come in like 48th place for an event lol.0

My advice to the OP is to continue playing the token lottery. There are only three sources for 3* covers right now: high event placement, tokens, and Hero Points. You've ruled out sources 1 & 3, so you're left with tokens. It's far from ideal, but them's the breaks.
At least you're part of an active 20-man alliance. Are you guys getting the alliance covers? If not, are you guys close to that threshold?0 -
As polarity guide has noted, the 2* to 3* transition can take months. It will be the longest wait.
The best way to earn covers in f2p manner is to do well in pvp. If you can get into top 50 every pvp, you will get 1 3* cover. If your alliance is top 100, you can get 1 more cover for that hero. 2 3* covers every pvp will help a lot.
The challenge is to win pvp consistently. Which means you need a good roster or to use shields regularly. For 2* teams, this is difficult as everyone has max obw, thor and Ares.
My personal suggestion is to spend some money on getting all the covers for a good 3*. LT is great, but you don't like him, so that's fair. Punisher is good too... in short just focus on 2 3* hero and get them to Max.
I spend money acquire the last few covers for lazy cap and pun, and with them max, I acquiring covers regularly. Now I don't have to spend any money, and just letting my initial "investment" roll along with its momentum.
Edit: when I say to buy covers, I meant to buy the covers from the training tab. DON'T BUY THE PACKS! It's going to be a waste of hp0 -

Yeah, it's extremely hard to get more than one 3* cover per event and even that is a lot of work. I'd say, play PvP to make sure you get HP, even if you can't place top 50 - and without shields or intense play in the last 60-90 minutes before the end of an event, you can't - you should collect as much HP as you can. This means, try to place top 100, or at least top 150. With whatever you get from alliance rewards, it should be enough to keep you in roster slots and allow for shield use in those select events where you really want to get the 3* cover.
In order to get one of those, I found my best strategy has been to play intensely about 8-7 hours before the end of an event and get to at least 800-850, preferably 900 (to get the HP progression reward, but 900 is very hard with a 2* roster). Then shield up for 8 hours until the end. Don't break shield, unless you see you've slipped out of top 50. If you're lucky, you end up in top 25 and will get 100 HP (+ at least 50 from alliance) that allows you to break even on HP. Factor in about 1-2 hours of play on the day the event ends if you want to place in top 50 and get the cover. If you can play 3 hours before event's end, you could use a 3h shield and actually gain some HP, but tbh, personally, I find it very hard to get high enough points to guarantee a top 50 placement at that time.
With the recent (and ongoing presumably) changes to mmr and bracketing the 2->3 transition has slowed down significantly and I'd estimate it'll take a few months more than players before us experienced. So if polarity says 1-2 months, I'd count with 3-4 at least.
Play PvE for HP and iso. Whatever covers you get, will be a great addition and if you think you have a reasonable chance at one of the new covers, go for it - it'll make the next PvE easier. But PvE is pretty intense and far from casual, imo.
Basically, acquiring 3* covers is made easier by HP use, these days for shields. As a F2P players you need to maximize your HP gain and then balance your available HP between shields to acquire select covers, and new slots.0 -
I am also slowly transitioning to a 3 star line up, what I do is save up a lot of iso and then just buy 50 basic packs for one 3 star cover. Additionally I do what others in this thread mentioned shield when I get to 900, if I cannot - shield earlier; grind pve and most of all: hope i get lucky.
There is no point in saving up iso if you never get those pesky 3 star covers
I really hope that they extend the pvp rewards and give out more 3star covers. Like top 20 gets two 3star top 100 gets one and top 150 alliances get a 3star. But that hope is in vain I suppose.
The problem is with seasons it is so much more competitive in every @#$% pvp event! Most of the people dont even need the stupid covers they just do it for season standing. My estimate is ~50% of the 3 star covers given out in the top 10 are sold for iso.0 -
"play intensely about 8-7 hours before the end of an event and get to at least 800-850, preferably 900"
This is no longer feasible with the new bracketing system where you'll be facing like-minded enthusiasts
There were practically NO 2 star teams in top 10 and the 43-53 interval - I ended up #48th after grinding like a madman to reach 733 paltry points and then shielding for a whole day because at around 10h away from the end I was getting attacked A LOT, being one of the few 2 star teams high up there.0 -

Idk, it's what worked for me occasionally over the last few events and I'm running a strictly 2* team myself. I think there is definitely still an element of luck and maybe some brackets being slightly easier than others. But you're right, getting to 700 is not enough, it has to be over 800.
Also, for some reason I actually find it easier to climb that high when playing 8 hours beforehand - if I play a day before (which I wouldn't, because who has 300 HP to waste?) I'm running into the same issue as you.
Oh and, I'd like to echo egal27 - it's risky, but I found that one does get the occasional cover when dropping some iso on normal tokens. I do it occasionally since I maxed out all the 2* I want - it's not like I'm using it for anything else or will in the near future after all.0 -
On the last events of season 1, it was not possible to win 3* covers in pvp for people with 2* roster, even when reaching 900 points.
Now, it is a little easier, but not as easy as before: you can aim to win a single 3* cover on each pvp event. If you need the two covers, it is doable, but you need to be really lucky with your bracket and retaliation (and expect a lot of frustration too: it is common to lose -80 points while you win a single +30 battle).
If you grind as high as you can, you will see a point (about 700/750 points) where you will be attacked a lot during the battles. I often got smashed down to 650 points when I nearly reached 800.
The strategy is only yo shield before you reach this point. If you feel lucky, try to push a little more. If you got smashed too low, retry (if you lose a lot of points, you will be attacked less often, thus leaving you time to go back near you previous score) and stop a little before. With about 750 points, you may have a 3* cover (I had one daken on last pvp, and viewing at my bracket scores, it should have be possible with this score on previous events too, by I didn't play them a lot after the 300 token).
Warning: this strategy may be obsolete very soon, the way pvp works changes very often nowadays...
Note: on this post, I assume you use only one shield at the end of the event, which is what you can do as a F2P player (the HP gain will be about the same as your shield). Needless to say that if you can unshield/reshield multiple times, you can aim for higher rewards.0
