Bracketing/seeding - how does it work?

I'm new to the game and I've been trying to figure out bracketing. A friend of mine (who has played longer than me, but isn't playing as often) is always ending up in top 25 with about 600 points in the versus events. With the same amount of points, I end up somewhere around 150-200th place.

He thinks it's based on the time that he starts to play the event. He usually starts with some four hours left. I've tried changing the time I start, but I always end up with a really tough bracket.

Am I automatically slotted into a bracket before I even begin? Does the time I start an event matter?

  • It's a bit harder to answer now since the devs have been playing with it, but you're aren't exactly pre-slotted. The time you join does affect it, but there's a sharding algorithm, so it isn't necessarily only what time you joined. I think so far the only dev confirmed thing that has an effect on it is number of days played, but many suspect there are other factors in play.
  • I wonder if number of roster slots has anything to do with it. I noticed when I got my 20th slot, my match ups went from being somewhat even to impossible. Now I frequently see maxed out 3* covers and I only have one maxed out 2*
