Consume / Consecrate - weird interaction with Gaea’s Revenge

Just finished a Rising Tensions match where Consume failed to cast when the first creature on the board was Gaea’s Revenge.

Three turns in a row Consecrate was cast instead of Consume without going to the graveyard (or exile for that matter). I checked several times that the correct side was chosen before proceeding with my turn, so something is definitely not right with this interaction.
