Rejoining an alliance

I went away in some short holidays to a place without Internet, so my alliance temporarily replaced me to avoid losing steam. But now when I try to rejoin it says " you were removed from this alliance. Try later." Browsing the Internet, I find lots of people stumbling about the same message but no one saying whether they were eventually allowed to rejoin or how long it took. Does anyone know?
