Mastering - large XP bonus unavailable when loosing first match

I just played two matches in TG (standard version is that is important).

Trying out a new idea meant having unmastered cards in my deck (A no go, for those of you who know about the self imposed ban).
Lost my first match and as expected did not get any XP.
I played a new round and won. However, I only got 6 XP for mastering cars instead of the expected 20 XP.

Is this correct that you can only get “full” XP in th first match? Which you better not loose then!

If this is the intended behaviour, then you are not making anything easy in the mastering department.
