The infinite deaths of Squee [Fix in 3.3]

My opponent had a Cruel Reality out.

I cast a Squee as my only creature.

At the start of my turn, Squee got -3/-3 and died (correct)
He then returned to the field as a 1/0 (Uh-oh)
He died again because he is a 1/0
He then returned to the field as a 1/0
He died again because he is a 1/0

This repeated for 10 min until I gave up and force quit the app.

Interesting fact, the Battle Log didn't have the Cruel Reality trigger listed, nor did it have any subsequent triggers listed.  This implies that the issue is with how Cruel Reality's trigger resolves more than it is an issue with Squee specifically.

    It's any -X/-X effect on Squee that would normally kill him.  

    With a -3/-3 effect, Squee returns as a 1/0 over and over (oddly, not above your other creatures).
    Languish causes a soft lock (negative toughness weirdness, I'm guessing).

    I've also seen it reported that the 1/0 death return loop is not triggering death triggers.

    Like @Mburn7 said, nothing in the battle log is listed after Squee is "destroyed".

    In the current JTH-event Phyrexian compleation, the same thing happened on Dominarias Coalition Squee got reduced to 1/0 and died repeatedly as it returned as a 1/0 creature.

    so it is impossible to complete this without something to remove Squee by bounce or stealing.

    I've come across an infinite loop when fighting Squee the Immortal. He gets killed by Spread of Phyrexius over and over again. I can't post a video but can provide it if necessary. Logcat output is here:

    Yep, came here to report this very issue. The opponent's own Squee is stuck in an infinite loop as the perma support just keeps killing him. Why is he returning as a 1/0 instead of his 4/3 self?

    Happened to me as well, just like I mentioned in my other post, only that one was with the epic dinosaur.  It really is an event breaking bug.  The AI keeps summoning Squee and it keeps looping, match after match.

    Isn't this emergency patch territory?

    You can still complete the event by replaying one of the earlier battles. So as annoying as it is to have Squee go infinite-deaths-loop, it doesn't really break the event, just that one particular fight.

    Just confirmed it. I wanted to post the bug myself, but I checked first and found this post. If Squee gets killed by Spread of Phyresis, he dies and comes back to the battlefield, dies again and comes back to the battelfield, and so on. The battle log doesn't log these interactions, as I think, the loop hasn't finished and never will.

    Came across this bug too in Journey through …  can't get around the lock if it happens, but just make sure you exile squee before he dies...  then you can complete this event.

    My infinite Squee death happened via Vraska 1's ult (Gorgon's Gaze, you know, -2/-2 to all enemies at the start of each turn). Basically as OP described: Squee dies, then dies, then dies, then dies.....

    PS: He was also my only creature at the time it happened, so maybe related?

    I'm willing to bet that as a result of them trying to shut down "Goblin Bomb", they screwed up the code with Squee returning to the field.

    Now he returns as he was when he died rather than being reset to his base of 4/3 (in order to prevent Sarkhan's Unsealing from triggering) so he's just going to keep on dying as he comes back.

    Unfortunately, being relatively new, my card selection is limited.  I have been able to finish this event before, but barely.  When you're on the edge of being able to do it at all, this bug makes it nearly impossible.

    That being said, I was able to beat the 3rd one eventually, but I am not exactly sure how.  Squee died by having a debuff on him after a few kills.  I was trying to time direct damage to kill him, but couldn't do it toward the end.  But instead of going in a death loop, he responded normally.  I can only assume the circumstances changed in a way that it didn't trigger.  I thought maybe a stealth fix had been put in.

    But the on the 4th fight, the AI cast Squee, I couldn't kill him before the debuff did, and the death loop returned.

    My guess is its more of a sequencing issue.  Squee dies, returns, then resets (in the code) instead of resetting the instant he dies and then returning.

    Its probably related to the issues we've been having for ages where cards that sacrifice to get an effect don't get that effect if the creature returns to the battlefield.

    Stuff dying and coming back seems to be a very difficult thing to program properly, and every attempt to fix it for one thing just breaks something else.
