Can anyone explain what the gold characters actually are/do?

I thought they might be interchangeable with the previous character (i.e. if a buff is for 2* cap you can also use 3* cap with a buff) but it appears to just be the same character but with slightly tweaked abilities?

Is there any point or plan to having them?

    treat them as entirely new characters

    If you put three on your team at the same time the stars all glow in unison and unlock a secret boost that costs nothing that round called a "lazy buff" where the machine plays the match for you....albeit not well... Pure speculation, but there might be later colors to the glowing stars requiring you to match colors in order to.activate the secret boost associated with that star color. Ice hinted somewhere about platinum stars in the future possibly allowing playing to start matches with +3 ap all and grey stars stunning the opponent for the first turn of a match...effectively giving you 2 turns to start the match.

    They sport glowing stars on their cover. And they prevent you from taking the standard version into the same fight.

    They let you take your favorite overpowered 1*-2* character with you into 3* matches in the endgame. If you are not transitioning to 3* characters then they mean nothing.
