Maelstrom Pulse not destroying plant token

Maelstrom Pulse is not destroying the Plant Token being generated by Dowsing Dagger... Happened to me 3 games in a row now.

That card must do its “destroy” action by assigning max damage to target creatures instead of just making them dead.  Tragic Arrogance has the same issue, doesn’t work against creatures with Prevent Damage.
