I crafted everything in Origins and Legacy. In HOU I still can't craft the exclusives. In XLN I crafted all but 3 Mythics. I might pull the trigger a few times on RIX. I always craft all the rares.

I would craft AMK to get cycling, then origins mythics.

I'm crafting HoU in the rare department like mad before rotation, trying to get HUF, since it's one of the most broken cards in the game.

I finished Origins first, then crafted rares from Standard sets until I had the ones I wanted (and got lucky on a few legacy rares I had been craving).
Now I just save up for mythics.

I'd recommend the rares rout, you get a lot more for the same amount of orbs and some of them are pretty powerful in their own right anyway.  But do Origins first, there are a lot of fantastic cards there.

Origins is definitely the best set to craft ... At least for mythics. Some of the cards are pretty amazing and they will remain standard.
When this is done, it depends on your orbs incomes and the cards you wanna get .... If you earn orbs slowly and you have interest in a single card in a middle of 20 mythics ... You'd better skip the set. If it rotates out before you get the cards you need you would have wasted your orbs for nothing but frustration.

Before crafting hit i Saved my dupes so i had a lot of orbs. Then I made a list  of every card in every set I want, and ten I started origin. Of course I had to craft every myth, because GR was the last one. Then I went for AKH because until I got every interesting. My last two missing  rare came from booster you  can still win.
Third Legacy and the time hod lost "newest" status I got the missing cards.

If you are low on orbs I would go for AKH/hod because cycling is still a winner and only one of the key cards is mythic (Sphinx), rest is rare (haven, np, mentor) or bellow. If you go with dovin procession is a nice addition (myth).

Hod got HUF and Gideons defeat in rere slot. Both staples in legacy too.

So some cards worth  to have before akh/Hod rotate out  of standard and migrate to legacy, if you still have a lot of legacy cards open. Lower chances against lower prices...

After crafting origin mythic my focus is on standard crafting. Right now my focus is on HOD mythic and only 1 mythic left. For the last sets, my focus will solely be on rares. The last 2 sets have the best rares in the entire game, including legacy. Ixalan mythics are not must have compared to HOD imo.

The way the system is set up, the pressure is on the player to collect as much cards in  newer sets as possible before it rotates. Once you miss a specific card when it rotates out, it's gone for good. The problem is that the legacy pool gets diluted  as more sets rotates. This makes it cost inefficient to chase a specific card despite the lower cost of crafting in legacy. I've learned to move on without baral, pig, olivia ulrich and other goodies; its unrealistic to chase them with 66 possible cards in my legacy pool.

In the long run, the legacy pool must be subdivided like in 2 or 3 separate pools to make it easier for people. D3 has nothing to lose since their economy is mainly about releasing new stuff.

I personally would not suggest people to chase legacy. There are often decent alternatives to legacy cards in new sets too. For instance, Samut mythic is a somewhat  alternative to Olivia, hour of promise to rishkar, Timestream to Gonti and so on.

I'm still working on my Origins Mythics, mostly because I spent some effort going after certain rares from other sets...
