Question regarding shielding

So when you shield yourself in PVP events, when you are attacked do the attacker get points? I know I don't lose points and can gain if I I win but I see in parentheses a point value, is that what the attacker gets or just what he woulda got?

he/she gets those points. That's one of the ways points can climb so high. People attacking others with high points who have shielded. Just earlier I attacked 3 guys who were all shielded for ~100 pts. That's basically 100 free points entering the system which will raise everyone's scores (spread out of course) eventually by several hundred (as I shield and get attacked by others, etc. etc.)

Yes, the attacker still gets points, specifically the amount that's in the parentheses that you see.

    (Your username makes me sad.)
  • Anyone knows if losing while shielded lowers your MMR? I know you get invisible to queues (besides kyipgate) but there are still retals.

I never thought of this when we were trying to figure out the crazy totals in some of the brackets. People are trying to pump up their Season 1 scores by shielding more often, thus putting infinite amounts of free points into the system, allowing them to jump higher than before, which is also what is causing the bottle necking in some of the brackets. And if you are shielded, you are not going to break shield just to retaliate on points that you didn't really lose.

So the craziness that we have seen this weekend, especially Top Gun, could have been because there were more players shielded then in previous events.

Shielding also has another side-effect. As players reach higher scores, they provide greater point-values as targets when they unshield. Previously, if you hit 1100, you only had 3- to 5-point matches. Now, you get plenty of 20- to 30-pt matches in that range. So that allows more players to rise higher, providing yet more high-value targets to lower-level players. When you unshield, you become a potential target for hundreds of people. So even just a few people increasing their point totals can have an exponential impact on the community.
