Tips for a new player who quit and is starting back up.....

So I played this game for a bit and for all five of the basic planes walkers.  I still stink at the game because I am always having cards be destroyed because I can't play them fast enough. BUT I love the puzzling aspect and Magic theme so I thought I would come back.

As a f2p player (is that even feasible/reasonable??) I was wondering if you could give me some tips to improve and/or things I should be working on to make the game more fun/better.

I HATE the "gacha" aspect of this and Japanese games like Puzzle & Dragons. Is there nay way to craft cards in this game for a relatively inexpensive price?

The more I think about it, the more I think I should drop some $$$ in the game...I would prefer not to but maybe that would make things a lot easier?! haha.

Thanks!

I’d encourage you to find and join an active development coalition. Many people get by fine being f2p here. Active coalitions help players build and play decks more effectively. Story Mode is good for getting started and lets you build up a card library, which is as important as getting the basic walkers early on.

F2P is totally possible.  It’s slower but you get a steady stream crystals, runes and jewels if you play the events and story mode gives beginners lots of runes and crystals.

To add to Gilesclone we also have orbs now which is a by product of receiving a duplicate card. Allowing a F2P player like yourself options to craft new cards that you are hoping to grab... and craft never produces a duplicate. :)

I play F2P and I currently have a perfect score in the current event. The least discouraging way to catch up is probably focusing on story mode, Training Grounds, and most importantly, getting the daily rewards and as many 2 hour boosters as you can. I took a couple months before I really started events, if you're fine with losing frequently starting right away will get you more stuff, but I found it nicer focusing on story mode until I got better cards. Also, the multi-color Planeswalkers are generally much better. For usefulness at low levels I'd suggest Nicol Bolas (more expensive, but basically the best), Kiora (the green/blue Nissa has more power, but Kiora is good with a much wider range of cards), Dovin Baan, Saheeli Rai (I'm actually not sure how good she is at low levels), and Tezzeret the Schemer. If you have a decent chunk of runes, Samut, Ajani Vengent, and Nahiri are all good at mid-range levels, say 30ish? Overall, figure out which colors you have good cards for, and try to find a good Planeswalker with those colors.

F2P is viable, you need to do the events you can with the time you have and build up crystals and win cards. Only buy the Premium Packs, it takes longer but the guaranteed rare is worth it.

Across Ixalan is the one of the cheapest ways to get cards currently, that and training grounds and then do what you can in the other events. Do NOT pay 60 gold to enter Trials, it is a very bad idea, but the 20 for Across Ixalan is ok since you can win a pack which would normally cost you more.

Stay in Bronze as long as you can, don't master cards "just because".
An early trick is any creature which grows by itself or anything with first strike that you can make block or give berserker to.

(There'll be a lot more help coming I'm sure.)

You need 1 PW of each colour, start with the cheap 5, get them around 30ish in each (keep them level) and then start looking at 2 colour people.

I've been playing for almost 2 years, I own almost all non-mythics and am doing well in my coalition and in events. All of that as F2P. But it's hard to say if that's still possible if you start now.

I'm f2p (except for buying Imminent Doom) and do pretty well overall. Make sure you log in every day and collect the daily log in reward. The free packs you earn through that will help you build your collection of Standard cards, and in doing Story mode try to accumulate the gold-awarding objectives to get the gold (Mana Crystals) you'll need to pay for Across Ixalan, which will also help you update your card collection by helping you earn a pack each time you play. The nice thing for you is Training Grounds is Legacy, so if you have quality cards/decks that are from older sets you can use them to earn another 15 Mana Crystals a day.

The only other advice I'd have is to be patient. It's going to take some time to build up the cards you'll need to be competitive, so hang in there and you'll be fine... :)

If you are ever going to spend money don't spend it on yellow crystals in order to buy more packs. You'll be severely disappointed. Only spend money on something guaranteed like an exclusive card or a planeswalker, but even then ask around other players about the potential playability of anything you want to buy.

I'd be very sympathetic to any new player who dropped money on red/white Hautli or the mythic Vona.

But is a boring horrible way to play. Try not to get trapped in that rut, cycle occasionally when the situation calls for it, but don't just play cycling decks for every game.

-Play training grounds, that is the easiest way to get gold.
-Since you have 5 basic walkers, DON'T spend money on the new ones. PWs are only as good, as your cards you are using along them.
-Buy 5x booster packs. Ixalan sucks, you would rather buy amonkhet or hour of devastation, because there is A LOT of absurdly powerful cards at common rarity. (cycling as well)
-While building your decks, prioritize including as much lifelinking creatures as possible -- they are ridiculous in bronze and silver and are able of swinging almost any race in your favor.
-Include cheap removal in your every deck: final reward, unsummon, galestrike, lethal sting, ambuscade, cast out , unlicensed disintegration, inner struggle, farm/market are my favorites. Removal lets you swing the tempo, protect yourself from occasional bombs in opponents' decks and save your guys from defenders.

p.s.: I ve been playing this game for less than a year, and without spending a single penny I managed to get in gold and be pretty competitive there, so my advice should be pretty helpful, I hope.

Nest Robber is the best Ixalan card, no contest.  Once you get it, I'd discourage pursuing Ixalan packs any further. ;)

Nest Robber is the best card in the game for realsies!!

My sentence above this one is in all caps...but because we can't use all caps on the threads, you'll have to use your imagination.
