Ideas for Legacy Planeswalkers

I dunno, I'm bored.  You're bored.  Lets brainstorm old Walkers who would be fun to see in MTGPQ.  There is plenty of precedent that they could one day appear.  Here are my thoughts

Karn Liberated

Color: Colorless (can only use colorless cards, can play on any color node)
Mana Gains:  +3 in every color (start at +1 in each, go up from there)

First:  Exile 1 random support/1 random creature/1 random creature and  support/ 1 target creature and support from your hand
Second: Destroy target support/Destroy target creature/ Destroy target creature and support/ Exile target creature and support
Ult:  Destroy all creatures and supports, both players discard their hands and draw 2 cards, then play the last 1/2/3/4 creatures and supports that were exiled

Sorin Markov

Color: Mono Black
Mana Gains:  Whatever.  Similar to one of the Lil's?

First:  Deal 2/4/6/8 damage to target creature or player and gain 2/4/6/8 life (or make it 1/2/3/6 if thats better)
Second:  Target player's life total becomes 60/50/40/20 (can be used on yourself for objectives)
Ult:  Take another turn after this one.  Gain 0/1/2/3 extra swaps for that turn

    Tibalt

    Color: Red
Mana Gains: +7 red, +5 black, -2 to all others (start at +3 red, +1 black and go up)

First: (6) Draw 3 cards, then discard a card at random (start at draw 1, discard 2 random; then draw 2 discard 2 random, then draw 2 discard 1 random)

Second: (15) Your opponent takes 4 damage for each card in his or her hand.  (Starts at 1)

Ult: (24) Gain control of all their creatures for a turn?? (Don't know if the mtgpq framework can handle that if you already have 2 or more creatures in play).  So maybe something like:

Disable your opponents creatures until the beginning of your next turn, each creature you control is reinforced 3 times.

    or

Disable opponents creatures plus Deploy the Gatewatch ability except at end of turn all creatures brought out were destroyed (I know this would destroy your entire field but hey Tibalt is the most chaotic planeswalker to play with lol).

That ultimate for Tibalt is an interesting idea, maybe tweak it to 'Each creature on the battlefield deals (half/all/all/all) it's power as damage to your opponent, then (all/all/your opponent's/your opponent's) creatures are disabled until the (end of/end of/end of/beginning of your next) turn.
    For level (1/2/3/4) of course.

Rather than dig that far back, I kind of want them to finish the ones they already have sets for.

    Nissa, Voice of Zendikar:

Her abilities translate surprisingly well to this game. A primary loyalty ability to make 0/1 plant tokens (maybe give them reach) with an increasing amount at each loyalty level wouldn't be bad.

Her second ability could exactly mirror Nahiri's ability now

And her third ability could care about the number of green gems in play. Pretty easy and would be a well-rounded panes walker.

    Chandra: Flamecaller

Again the creation of tokens with the first loyalty counter is really nice, and exiling them at the end of turn is fine. It can act similarly to ally-Gideon's first ability, and perhaps they gain power, berserker, and/or trample as the loyalty level goes up.

Second loyalty ability would be interesting to see translated, but could be something along the lines of discard your hand, then draw 3/4/5/6 cards depending on loyalty level.

Final ability could just be increasing damage to creatures, possibly with a level 4 effect of only hitting your opponent's creatures.

And of course Tamiyo, Field Researcher:

There's already been an entire discussion regarding her, so I won't go into detail regarding potential loyalty abilities.

Eh, I don't think we need more Nissas and Chandras.  I was hoping for more variety.  But yes, all of those seem like they would be fun to see in pq

I'm with you on the Nissa part, she's got the most planeswalker variants in this game so far, I'm good not seeing her pop up again for a while.

We only have 2 Chandras though, and (in my personal opinion at least) neither of them are really good.  I'd be okay with them releasing *one* more Chandra and make her actually pretty good, and then not seeing a new Chandra planeswalker for years lol.

My vote for Tibalt is because we don't have any planeswalkers that have a gamblingesque aspect to them.  I want to see mtgpq's own personal style of a mtg flip-coin deck, where there's a chance of some amazing abilities, but at the chance of causing damage to yourself instead.  This game needs a more chaotic element then gem destruction/conversion.

There are currently three Nissas, also three Gideons, three Lilianas, and once Ixalan launches, three Jaces.

Its fair if you’re tired of the same faces, but she doesn’t have more than any other currently. Also those 5 are the characters the entire Magic story has been centered on since before the launch of this game, so it makes sense that we’d have multiple variants of them.

A fair point, what I meant was that 3 is the most of any variant of planeswalker so far and she's at cap.  I'm also tired of Gideon and Lily, and would much prefer to see the Black/Red Minotaur or (even better) a Black/Green Vraska than see another Jace.

I get what you're saying.  I played mtg long before The Gatewatch were a thing (Even before the Weatherlight crew, which I am interested in seeing a bit more of).

I dunno...maybe my 'ol timer mtg purist mindset is showing here...but (talking about the card game here) all this online mtg chatter swapping deck ideas and "which card would you play and why not?  Which card is your favorite to play?"  plus gossip about the gatewatch soap opera makes me feel like I'm reading a Cosmo magazine

Even before the Gatewatch, though, the five were featured in most core sets. Gideon was usually replaced by Ajani as the white walker, and Gideon was the green one till the chained veil made him go all psychotic. But there was always a Chandra, and Jace, and a Liliana in the core sets.

I'll give you that I also prefer more variety, and I would too. But to me, at least, I don't care what name is on the planeswlker as long as he/she has good abilities, and that over the printings have at least a couple playable versions. Some of the planeswalkers, unfortunately, have suffered in this regard.

To clarify, I was referencing The Gatewatch as the name for mainstream theme, which would be planeswalkers in general in this case which traced back to...the Lorwyn block?  I think that's when they first introduced the members of what would eventually be mtg's version of The Justice League.

I understand that you're just there for the technical aspects of the cards, and that's fine.  I **into the salt I go** usually get into the storyline as well, and they seem to have turned these planeswalkers and their soap opera drama (I've skimmed some of the literature) into the Mickey Mouse icons of the game, which is only further solidified every time they release yet another Jace and friends.

But I digress, it's less bothersome in this game because you're playing as them and not as a planeswalker yourself and they're just tagging along for the ride in your mtg deck.  I'm just hoping for some more diversity.

tl dr: bla bla bla, words, more words, angry wombat foams Tide Pods all over this thread.

It's true, they changed focus in the story onto the primary five Gatewatch members around the Battle for Zendikar block. I think it's because they've invested so much history since Lorwyn  into making the iconic characters as poster children for the game they can use to market it with consistency. Since they were deleting core sets, they had to push them into the main story, but after they announced they were returning to printing core sets, we saw them get defeated and dispersed by Nicol Bolas, which now opens up the story for other planeswalkers to shine, and maybe we'll see them make appearances in the story like they used to before.
