Are Crash of the Titans matches made solely on character abilities, or is there a story behind them?

Are the opponents decided by which powers would make for a difficult match, or are they taken from comics? Based on the latest Crash, has Agent Coulson ever crossed paths with Doctor Strange before?

    It started as Comics but XFW v Cyclops was alittle difficult.. Mr. Fantastic v Doom is ridiculous. Oftentimes it's basically against a character that has at least 2 of the same colors as you

    The second ever Crash was Invisible Woman vs Quicksilver, and that was based mostly on mechanics (Quicksilver's blue being able to hit invisible characters, and at that time Invisible Woman could lock tiles to speed him up even more).
