Is the 5* Strange permanent heal?

Not that I know of, they turned it into a passive + active power. So you can use it to actively deal damage instead of waiting for them to attack you.

    http://marvelpuzzlequest.wikia.com/wiki/Doctor_Strange_(Sorcerer_Supreme)
By the Flawless Faltine’s flame - let the power you possess strike you the same! Deal 1533 damage.
(PASSIVE) Whenever an enemy fires a power, deal 557 damage to the target.

The 5* does not heal! Only the 3* does.

5trange's purple is also different. It creates a permanent Eye tile that can only be removed by a row/column clear. It removes a certain number of enemy special tiles each turn; the kind and number of tiles dependent on the number of covers you have.

    Kind yes, number no.
He always removes just one tile.

The rational behind the 3*/5* pairs is that if they only released a 5*, hardly anyone would ever have it fully covered (or even see one cover) . If they only released a 3*, lots of players wouldn't reasonably be able to use them. By doing both, as versions of each other, they can do both and cover a much larger player base. By using the same character design for both, this is actually a feasible proposition.
    That's the official spin, yes.

More like it's to get people to buy two roster slots instead of one, and further dilute the 3* tier, forcing everyone to carry yet another dead weight char.

Dual 4* / 5* releases would make more sense in today's meta.

3* tier should have been finished ages ago, but Demiurge found a way to make money off it, again.
Wouldn’t that cost more?  I mean same 2K HP in roster spots, but way more iso to champ a 4/5 combo than a 3/5, if we are using your “they just want to make money” theory.

Why presume there are no new players to this game? 3* characters will matter a lot to them for at least a year to come. There is no reason in "finishing" the 3* tier as long as there are new players coming. You and me and many of the people we communicate with on this forum does not define "the meta". I' sure of this.
Also, who says we need to buy two slots, if one is against having two and is "done" with their 3*, they can sell it to make way for the 5*
    :)

That's still only a soft "need", not a hard "need"

When ever I get around to champing the new Gambit (which may be a while) I will use him with strange to hit the goon nodes coming and going. So they get hit when they try to put a CD tile down, then I'll remove them with Gambit and then smack them when those countdowns resolve. What's there not to love about a highly accessible 3* like Gambit?

It's 5* Gambit that removes CD tiles. The 3* version can only remove A/P/S tiles, even at 5 covers.

Iirc, Gambit can only remove attack/strike/protect tiles
    CDs not included
just like Bullseye & Strange's purple

Yes you are right for Gambit (Modern), but now I have a very quick counter to neutralize muscles and taijitsus(?) with their smoke bombs and the like without having to wait for the purple AP. A couple of turns is all it takes to build up enough reserve.

Edit: Gambit (Classic) was the one I observed overwriting my Medusa CDs.
