Avatar of Woe

Avatar of Woe and No Mercy work nicely together... throw in Cartouche of Ambition and Woe can recoup life. So it can be useful in a control type deck. Of course he should at least have menace... card version has fear so it fits.
As matter of fact I was thinking of working up a Tezz2 deck that would abuse Avatar... and No Mercy. Throw in some your cast does nothing cards and cheap kill spells for early and of course draw sources and maybe some solid discard like Infinite Obliteration.0 -
It will fit perfectly in my Subtypes_Avatar deck.

This is not a terrible card. But it also shouldn't be a masterpiece this way. And, like we discussed in the last round of MPs, I still think masterpieces should NOT include bad cards. That's not their place the way they are set up. There are definitely masterpieces that I consider to be worse.1

Tell you what, let's take an uncommon card like Oketra's Assistant, scale it up in power until it gets to the power level of a Masterpiece card, and call that an Avatar of Woe.

I agree that it's not terrible, at least when compared to other masterpieces, but it's still horribly designed. They took one aspect of the paper cost reduction and warped it into the goofy thing we have now (I enjoy that they did translate the 6 mana-cost reduction). I assume the reason this doesn't work similarly to the paper version is because they can't make it work that way with the existing code. This should read "If there are 6 creatures in all graveyards, this costs 18 less". And as someone else pointed out, why are we missing the rest of the cards abilities? Sure, fear doesn't exist but menace is close enough and they've already taken much bigger liberties than that. Then there's the tap to destroy. Why not "Activate 1: Destroy the first creature your opponent controls and this creature gains can't attack or block until the beginning of your next turn."? Activate 1 keeps it from being oppressive while the drawback of not being able to attack with your 12/12 (or larger) seems fair. So then, my problem isn't with the card itself but with the lack of creativity in it's design. One could argue that it was intentionally designed to be a flop but I argue that the designer was just lazy.5
