Who should I attack first?

In the top gun tourney I have 147 points currently. One of the people I can attack has 388 points and I can attack him for 40 points, another person I can attack has 505 points and I can attack him for 44 points. To get the maximum number of points from 2 battles, who should I attack first? My guess is to go for the 388 first, as the higher person is so far ahead that my gaining 40 won't change what I get from him much. Has anyone tested this? Is my intuition right here?

A related question, suppose I have time for more than 2 battles and I have the above setup along with a third match at roughly my level (let's just say it's 150 points). What is the best way to proceed? Should I start with the guy at my level or go for the high point people first?

Start with lower rank first because the next match will have lower points than prior to the other match. As for you follow up question, it depends. You don't want a retal that will pull you down because you fought more people. Sometimes better to just skip and hope for a higher ranked match.
  • The difference from the order will be is single points so don't bother about order. In general if you can win it always play for the most points -- less games, also less chance to retal if you play up and stop. (If you play more certainly you will go above people who were above you at time of attack and become a good target to get points back with extra...)
  • The person with the highest positive difference in points is the least likely to retaliate so you should always start with him assuming the difficulty of the opponents is similar.
  • I wound up doing the lower point person first (still way above me so I figured it didn't matter much as far as retaliations go). The higher one only lowered by 1 point, so it seems like that would be ideal.

Your responses made me wonder how often you guys do skips. I usually only do it if their point value is WAY below mine or if I don't think I can win the battle. Do you guys typically skip people who are just a little bit below you in points?
  • It depends. Below 500 points attacks don't hurt as much so skipping is not necessary. As I climb higher I skip more to find matches worth at least equal points. I'd rather skip to find high point matches, it lowers your chances of being retaliated and how much retaliations hurt you. Plus its often quicker to skip and do fewer high point matches than whatever comes up.
  • If they're worth less than 25 points, do not retaliate if they have Spiderman and the attack came recently. Spiderman is almost always an indicator of willingness to retaliate against any opponent worth at least 25 points (and if they're worth less than 25 to you, you're worth at least 25 to them), because you sure aren't going for speed when you've Spiderman. Everything else you just have to judge how strong their team is relative to yours, and how strong your team is relative to people of that level. You could be facing a team you've no chance to defend against like LT + Magneto, but if you're pretty confident your team is stronger the rest of the guys your opponent sees then it might still be okay to retaliate. For example, if you run say The Hood + LT, while you can't expect to defend against Magneto with any reliability, most high end player will skip The Hood because he's pretty much the strongest defensive character in the game and it's a greater risk to fight The Hood over say, Black Panther.
