How bad is scaling with just one champed 4*? and related planning concerns

Right now I have four fully covered 4*s (Blade, Spider-Woman, Star-Lord, and XFW), and suddenly a whole crapton of Blade covers, so It looks like I'm going to finally champ my first 4*.  This will make him by far my highest level character (the next closest would be my 5*s, none of which I've spent a dime in ISO on).  I still rely primarily on 3*s  (all but six champed, four intentionally), and focus mostly on PvE while still hitting my alliance's very modest PvP requirements (just 300 per event).  I have a few 4*s that are within a few covers, but only two are in the current token pool (Carol and Gwenpool).

I have the ISO and CP to make a small, useful-but-not-all-that powerful stable of 4* champions, so the question is - is it better to champ several of them at once, knowing that I'll have to start relying on them a LOT, or slowly add champs while I get more of the latest 12 closer to champ level?

My biggest concern is managing PvP scaling, which I've already seen ramp up considerably lately (though whether due to my SCL - I'm at 72 - or because I now have several 3-4 cover 5*s, I don't know).  I play semi-casual and don't spend money, so I don't expect that any 4* champions I have will ever get much more than a few covers above base champ level.  If that's the case, while I love the ability to respec, is it even worth the ISO investment at all on a mid or low-tier character when you don't have more than one or two top-tiers?   And while I like a challenge, I really don't want PvP to become a horrible slog, especially as PvE has become much more of a slog itself with recent changes, and I find the idea of just using the same team in every fight horribly boring.

My memory is quite vague now, but I think when I champed my first 4*, I didn't notice any changes in my scaling or MMR at all. The second bumped my scaling a bit, but the big jump (+20 lv) was when I champed my 4th one.

Your 4 stars will get much more powerful when you champ them, so any scaling increase in PvE will not be that bad. Your mmr for PvP will cause you to face much stronger opponents though, but having a couple of boosted 4 stars will let you deal with that. If you have the iso, champ a couple at once.

First couple champs you'll see the scaling bump.   Champ quality and you'll be able to manage.

I'm with aa25. There might have been a bump in PVE,, but it wasn't anything that couldn't be handled with the boosted champed 3*, let alone the shiny new 4* champ. And, my first 4* champ was Fury, so he wasn't that shiny or new. Or powerful, although just like anybody he's somewhat frightening boosted. I would just champ the best choice you have (ahem *blade* ahem...), and then build up from there depending on your ISO. Blade will be my 21st champ, and I really wish I had gotten the covers sooner.

Good luck; you're not far from the sweet spot in the game in my view.

Interesting!  This seems to come in line with what I've read, that it's a combination of number of covers and total levels of your top guys.

It seems like I can stick with my original plan - wait until I have several strong 4*s covermaxed, then promote them in groups - just that now the Daywalker will be there to greet them with a toothy grin at the gates of Champland.
Thank you all for your advice!
