Story Mode Abandoned?

I've seen this brought up a number of times--why isn't there more story mode? It's bizarre that a new player (like myself) plays against all of this Origins and Battle for Zendikar while the events and efforts are all focused on Kaladesh. @Brigby I am curious if there is any info on this (and I wanted to test the mention feature, to further clog your inbox).

it would probably mean more free crystals and they don't want to do that.

I would guess they simply don't have the capacity to do so. 

Because they already give out free crystals and adding new story mode content wouldn't be to much of an impact crystal wise.
In addition, your chances are higher to hook up players in the long run, I think.

Please upvote if you want more story! The real reason we need this is not for the crystals but so that we can test with set specific mechanics in non-coalition/event spaces. I want an SOI testing area and a KLD testing area. It would probably be nice Amonkhet too but alas the devs don't want this. 

You know what else would be nice? For the rest of the planes walkers to get Heroic treatment.

Except that Emrakul's Corruption and Avacyn's Madness weren't really arenas to test out set mechanics, many of the fights were tooled for already well-working, refined decks. Getting these fights into a replayable mode would be nice, that's for sure, but we really need more than just the pre-determined fights in the couple tutorial match-ups in order to play with and build for the set mechanics.

No surprise here, I'm also for an updated story mode for all the expansion that are missing there now.

The way the current trend for rune value and crystal value, I can't see why they wouldn't be able to put the stories out there. It's simply a matter of does D3Go and Hibernum want to pay developers to put them together.
Aside from the devs, I wonder how many of the business/product owners that pay the developers actually play the game.
All that said, I would be interested in more story mode, too, if anything to add more flavor and give people a different way to test out their new decks apart from QB.

It was already suggested to put out the PVE coalition events out there...
Of course, it would be nice to have the old pattern of win with every color and so on.
But I think many would be happy if it would just be there to test your decks against the challenges, so that you are better prepared when the coalition event shows up.

I am grinding all of the crystals I didn't already claim in Story Mode now, before they remove it (too many free crystals!) or put it behind a paywall (premium new player content! comes with 1000 runes and 5 unobtanium!)
