Where did Brian come from?

So as always, I keep track of my opponents in these PVP games just to see if matchmaking has improved (Spoiler Alert: It Hasn't) and I seem to be playing around 40% of my games against Brian1125. A quick check in the chat apps and it seems to be the same for a lot of other players.

How does this work? Please give us some kind of idea of how matchmaking is done? Or maybe give us the option to pick from a selection of players like in MPQ, just bit boring playing against the players all the time.

Agreed on all points, but just for the record he's been part of my regular rotation in platinum for awhile, along with Mersicide and the usual gang of players. This event I've seen a lot of Mersicide, Laguruthon (I can never remember how to spell that), Brian1125, and some fellow named Mistborn.

I have been slacking a lot the past few months, doing the basic minimum to support my coalition. As a result of that (and connection bugs that nerf 5/6 of my node plays) I have dropped to a rank 250-500 player for individual scoring.

At that level I see a much larger variety of player.

When I was trying to be in the top 25 I also saw the same match ups over and over. My guess is that's why really engaged players see the same opponents over and over.

You probably do not match up against my decks any more.

I'm always somewhere between 10-100, and didn't notice a difference in opponent variety until I stopped mastering cards. Prior to Kaladesh I'd mastered every set as it came out, but the cards were underwhelming enough to play with that I chose not to. Now, while I still see Mersicide, Brian, Killwind, Elvin, Gakera, etc, I'm also seeing newer people, which is fun. Some of them are quite good.

In this thread, viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61276&p=653879#p653879, Cthulhu seems to indicate that mastery level is related to it.

He says, ""Thank you, for this it's kind of hand in hand depending on where you rank with the color mastery etc. We definitely have discussed this for a while and hope to have it addressed, I just don't have a timeframe yet.". I interpreted that as mastery and matchmaking being related, at least partially.

This would also seem to align with your experience, Fiddler, as detailed here: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=49427#p563089

Brian1125 has been a common opponent for a while now; I think he might have just tiered up from gold.

Unfortunately this is not the case - in gold you're pretty much guaranteed to see Longshaft whether you're going for top rank or not.

I'm in Gold, not platinum, but I've run into him. He must have just gone into platinum recently.

I've been playing against him for a while in PvP.

The sad thing for me is that his decks just aren't challenging for me. No offense, mate, it's probably just because I have a bigger collection of cards than you.

But honestly no-one near the top of the leaderboards should be getting an easy ride against vastly mismatched opponents. In fact no-one at all should be getting vastly mismatched opponents. But we all know that.

I agree with this sentiment. On the one hand, having not that many really good cards, I am actually glad to see my decks matched against his (happens often), since they are not really bothersome. And that is the opposite of how I feel about facing so many of others (names known) with their highly optimized QB decks against my sorry attempt to bring enough vehicles on the board...

In both cases the solution would be so easy: Give us complete randomness. So we can face not only decks which are new for us, thus creating the kind of suspense "what will I have to go against", but also so we can actually have the chance playing against people who also are taking the risk of building decks for objectives 2. and 3. which I believe many actually do.

I understand that some choose not to change their best decks for the sake of winning all ribbons, and I am fine with that. But I have the feeling that many of them are constantly in the platinum matchmake-bingo, and that is what bothers me.

I don't like pure randomness, there should be some design behind it. I still believe that matchmaking should be based on a ladder. As you climb the ladder in rank you should be facing decks crafted by your direct competition. Obviously this wouldn't work without some type of contingency to account for players expending their charges then quickly swapping their decks to pure grief decks.

That would be fine for me too, since the "randomness" would still be served; the rank dependency would in most cases lead to different results each time you play.

Something like "a random deck from ranks +20/-20 above/below yours"

Lagurutan's decks are not nice. Very very naughty! Anyone know what coalition he is in? I assume a good one as he has every card that I still need icon_evil.gif

I matched off against you a few times this last event.

Though I never hear or see my name in the matchings, which either means you never see me, or my decks aren't horrible to play against icon_e_wink.gif
