Big enchilada glitch.

Defeated a symbiot and Steve Rogers jumped into the first spot. Then immediately another symbiot jumped in front pushing Steve to the 2nd spot. I kept attacking and all the damage kept registering on Steve in the 2nd spot. After I finished him off damage started registering in the first slot again.

I've seen that too. Likely you killed the symbiot with a passive attack like 3* Strange. They say its a known issue.
