Question: At level 141 both CMags and Hulk have 60 Red. Can someone please verify for me whether on the board red tiles are matched by Mags or Hulk?

Context: I'd rather leave Mags at 140 so my 141 Hulk can tank red.

Thanks!

  • They'd be tied in red at 141 so it's determined solely by your position on the team, with center > left > right.

    Phantron, thanks for the response.

Could I please get a slight clarification?

Is this position determined by my initial setup? If so, how do I set them up so Hulk tanks red? Where do I put Mags? Where do I put Hulk?

Or is it determined by the last match made?

    Thanks!
  • Before the match starts where you get to pick who you want to use, put Hulk in the middle, between the other two chosen characters if you want him to take red tiles. Put Magneto on the left side if you want him to take certain colors over the person on the very right side.

Wow! I never knew positioning made a difference!

    Mind.
    Blown.

    Thanks!

It only matters on an exact tie. If you have level 141 Hulk and level 140 CMag, Hulk actually has a higher red at 141 because there's a decimal value to the tile strength that you cannot see. In this case Hulk will always take the red regardless of the position on the team. In general, ties are only possible if two characters are of same level and same rarity.

So impressed. Can I ask if there are any resources I can check out? I mean, how the hell do you know something like this?

Phantron has 900 more posts on this forum compared to the second most active person. He seems to soak up knowledge like a sponge does water and is always more than happy to share with anyone that asks. This particular issue had been discussed before with people trying out different combos and team positions and Phantron remembers all.
  • I like to figure out game mechanisms.

Phantron (or anyone), is there a way to affect what power the AI uses via placement?

eg. I have CMags, Patch and Hulk. When being attacked I'd prefer Patch to use his Beserker Rage and Best There Is over Hulk's Thunderous Clap and Smash. Will positioning him ahead of Hulk prompt the AI to prioritize his abilities over Hulk's?

The AI uses abilities as follows:

If it has enough AP to use the most expensive ability in a color it will always use that. If they're tied in cost, it picks one at random (like Smash versus The Best There Is).

If the AI has enough to use a cheaper ability but not the more expensive one, it makes a check on whether to save up or not each turn. The chance it will save up is related to the difference of the cost of the ability. That is, suppose you have Ballistic Salvo (20 blue) and ATU (2 blue), the chance of the AI saving up for Ballistic Salvo is very high. On the other hand if you have Berserker Rage (9 green) versus Thunderous Clap (10 green), the chance of the AI saving up for Thunderous Clap is very little.

In practical terms, the AI always invariably uses the AP on the cheaper abilities first because it has to make the 'save AP' roll each turn and it almost always decides to spend it at some point, unless it gets a miracle cascade to hit the higher cost ability first. In your example, it's 50/50 on whether Smash or The Best There Is will be used. In the case of green, if the AI has 10 or more green it will always use Thunderous Clap. If it has exactly 9 green it will have a very high chance of using Berserker Rage (but a nonzero chance to save up for the 10g ability, just don't count on it).

    Ah, that makes total sense.

    Thank you so much.
