Are you here for the Marvelness or the puzzle / RPG;ness?

Basically,
are you into this game mainly because you're such a Marvel fan or because you're super-duper fancy puzzle / RPG games?
I'd say I'm most casual when it comes to Marvel. Of course I never disliked it or anything but I'm not such a diehard fan I need a Marvel-themed game to play.

Puzzle / RPG games, however, I've been digging since Puzzle Quest and I have tried at least 40 games of this kind - most of them highly disappointing. I was stuck in Gems of War for a while but gave up when I tried MPQ out which has the downright best mechanics in the "genre". There are a few other I've been looking at for a while; Sabers Edge, Heroes of Battlecards for instance but I don't want two games and I really prefer MPQ over those anyday.

What other puzzle / RPG games are you / have you been into?

I really enjoyed the first Puzzle Quest (a game which has had no equal in terms of gameplay and different modes and such, IMO).
The second one was...alright. I enjoyed it well enough but I wasn't so keen on the dungeon crawly nature of it. And before long battles were just the same thing over and over.

Then I saw this. I was already a fan of the games, but a Marvel one? I leapt on that. Very surprised to find that *all* matches do damage, and wondered how that could possibly be balanced. No skull tiles? Whut? And you have a team of 3!? Whut!?

Theming can go a long way into hooking someone into a game. I might not have cared so much if it was DC Puzzle Quest. I suppose what keeps me playing at this point is 50% fun and 50% sunk cost fallacy =P

Yeah, back in the day when we only had 5 health packs that recharged, you'd often get to a point where you said "Welp, that's me done for a few hours."
Sadly if you wanted to be competitive, you'd sometimes find your PvE run hit a brick wall part way through because you wiped once and needed to use more than half your health packs. And you had PvP to do. So it felt a little **** being nudged towards buying more packs.

It was a wonderful day when they upped it to 10. The game's come a long way since it released on Steam and I gave it a shot.

I'd say the Marvelness and the RPG-ness. If it were just the match 3 aspect, there are other games. But I enjoy seeing the characters, and learning about new ones I've never seen before (never read the comics, so learning about people like Sentry was cool), and I also enjoy the power creep of leveling up characters.

btw, if folks like puzzle-y RPG fighting games, you should check out Runespell: Overture. That one involves poker instead of match 3, but it is still super fun.

The marvel Ness is the deciding factor for me. I love learning about the popular new marvel characters from game as I quit buying marvel when they raised prices to $3.99. Also trying a MPQ Marvel Legends display, come cho and gwenpool figures lol.

Both. I've never played a 'puzzle quest' and honestly wasn't sure what that meant, but I have tons of puzzle games on my phone that have amused me for various lengths of time. This one has been the one of stuck with the most due to the Marvel IP and the fact that I'm playing cooperatively with friends.

Marvel. I probably wouldn't be playing if they didn't have that license.

Both. I came for the marvel meets RPG I stayed for the game increasing my interest in marvel and enjoying the powering up my roster. I hated but now love the 4* transition as the characters and combinations with such a wide tier makes gameplay really fun and interesting.

Especially as the transition isn't super fast I get to play with some teams for a while before my next four star champ comes in.

Just did Hulk buster and omg boosted he's amazing didn't really understand till champed. Now I've got my 14th spider woman expiring so she's next. Still desperate for red cage covers though he's one of my favourite four stars (as a mainly pve player)

Marvel. I literally searched for Marvel in the play store and it was (at the time) the first result. 2 years+ commitment decided by what the top result was. Granted I wouldn't have stayed if I didn't enjoy it, but I didn't put much thought into picking it up.

Basically the same answer. I wouldn't be this deep in the game if it wasn't for the people I've befriended along the way.

My friends and I all had the original PQ for out Nintendo DS back in what.. 06? We were obsessed with playing Pvp wirelessly from a few feet away from each other! The second one and the ones after sucked.

I grew up collecting Marvel comics and to this day have the t shirts and statues, watch all the movies and Netflix shows, still read comics here and there.

So when I saw this game I couldn't install it fast enough, on day 990 and planning on playing until I'm sick of it

I wouldn't say that I care about Marvelness or Puzzleness. I just like to figure out good character combos and play them, with the adding bonus that your characters get stronger over time. I'm methodical, so I would like to try out every character's strengths after champing them, but with the constant release of new characters every 2 weeks, I can't keep up. If D3 is listening, please slow down the character release schedule!

It's a little of both for me.

I played the first Puzzle Quest as well as Galactrix, and enjoyed them as casual diversions. I've also been a fan of the Pokemon series for a long time, so there's something about the blending of the two -- a match-3 game mashed up with RPG/progression/collection stuff -- that works well for me.

Marvel skinning is a nice icing on the cake. I mean, Pokemon shows you can just invent characters and make it work rather than needing to use existing ones, but the Marvel universe makes it easy to latch onto. And as someone who considered himself a casual comics fan rather than hardcore, MPQ led to me subscribing to Marvel Unlimited (which I love in ways that's probably saved for another thread).

I first got into it when I saw a Marvel game was pretty highly rated. So I guess I was brought in by the Marvelness. I am a big match 3 player (level 2306 on candy crush) and a big RPG fan (Horizon zero dawn and Mass effect andromeda will keep me busy for a while), so this game definitely hits on all fronts.

And I also joined Unlimited thanks to MPQ. I heard good things about Matt Fractions Hawkeye, read it and enjoyed it. So I was psyched when they added Kate Bishop to the game. I also loved playing Kamala Khan so I went and read her comics and loved that too. Its a nice loop that keeps me interested on both sides

I had the game recommended to me by a Marvel fan. I am also a fan of Marvel. Without the Marvel characters I would have never started playing this game.

The rarity system and required characters rip all the rpg aspects out.

There's a best build for 90% of the characters, the leveling can only go in 1 direction ( I can't have a 8/3/2 GSBW vs a 10/1/1 one)

The node with required characters limit all diversity.

Your champed 4 cyc, is identical to mine, save you having more luck and drawing one or two more.

The combo of my love of the original Puzzle Quest and my casual enjoyment of Marvel stuff was what got me in. At this point it's mostly completionist OCD.
