Seed teams

The handful of times I've been able to get the seed teams for PVP - I'm usually at work or asleep when PVPs reset - it's a huge advantage. I can get my first 150-200 points (or more) without any fear of retaliation, and so it makes for a large head start. And the times I do it, it gives me a big advantage over the other people in my bracket - usually I won't actually start on the tournament until I get home from work after it starts, which means I may be the only person in my bracket who got the seed teams.

An idea - and there might be a non-obvious downside I'm not thinking about to this - to even the tables a bit - give everybody the seed teams as their initial slate of opponents, regardless of when they start the tournament. It will give people a nice leg up for getting the first few progression awards, and might ease people into the tournament structure. I can see the obvious downside to this for D3 - it will inject a lot of tournament points into the game, and this may affect progression award structure (which could be slightly revised), but it's mainly going to help newer players (getting freerangecage might be the only way some newbies will win a match early on) and reduce the timing advantage that comes from a convenient start time.

  • If you gave everyone seed teams, than it would pump too many points into the tournament, forcing devs to up the progression rewards up to obscene totals again (like they did when shields were first introduced).

Which would mean more grinding/fighting to achieve similar awards. Also, the potential for more gaps between packs of players, which can lead to frustration of being stuck in an MMR bubble you can't break free from.

My objection to this quote is the way you used the words "too many" and "forcing." Pvp progression has been broken since they freaked out about shields and over-corrected. While they appear to have taken steps to correct it (they seem to have moved the zero-sum point in scoring), the desirable progression rewards on the pvp chart (50 hero-bucks or better) are still out of the reach of the overwhelming majority of players (over 99%). If an initial slate of seed teams would boost player scores closer to those desirable rewards, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Giving everyone seed teams would be an interesting thing to try out. I'd like to see what that did to overall scores.

    .

Obviously there is, because you never see them make changes quicker than when progression rewards are acheivable by most of the player base. Time and time again.

So, that's where my comments were coming from. Not from what I wish, but what is the reality of the how the devs behave.
  • You're so cynical. I mean, maybe justifiably so...
