top defensive team
[Hey guys. I'm looking for the best defensive teams out right now, meaning what team combinations have you yourself avoided and have trouble fighting. I'm asking so I know what combo to play when attacking and what combo the computer can use to defend.
I'm in the 2 to 3 stR rannge. Max level 85. So far I avoid iron man 3 star and red mags, and depending o. The team, daken.

You need AP stealing (or suppression)/simple damage/strike tiles.
Which is why everyone runs OBW/Thor/Wolverine at your level.
at higher levels, many people run Hood/Cmags/Patch (or Punisher)

The problem with building a 'defensive team' is that the AI is pretty stupid. So even if it works 'on paper' doesn't mean the AI will carry it through. Also, we have no way of knowing how the AI uses teams we want to set up, unless we luck out and face them in PvP.0 -
Hulk best defender there is!
(Seriously, if you come across me in the game and you see the Hulk in my party, your only strategy is to skip. Run away like a scared little girl until you find your mommy and she gives you a cookie to make you feel better.)0 -
Well, the best defense team is such which other players won't be keen on fighting. In order to achieve this scarecrow effect, you need some (or all) of the factors I've listed below:
1) Damage. Raw, unconditional damage, powerful attacks, strike tiles, attack tiles, whatever works. Most players want to get out of the attack with a relatively healthy team, so that they can continue fighting. If you show them a team which guarantees severe health loss, they may reconsider and target someone else. Great examples are Classic Mags (purple power can down a character in one shot), Patch (tremendous damage output, although double-edged; might hurt your team more), Ares (same), Punisher (low costed attacks, huge versatility), Psylocke (another character with fast, low-cost damage) and other similar heroes. A special mention is needed for AoE attacks - those are dreaded as well, since one attack can possibly make entire attacking team use health packs. Black Panther and Classic Storm are most vivid examples. GSBW has a really devastating attack, too, but the AI is rubbish with her (we'll be back to that later).
2) Health points, obviously. Noone wants a single battle that lasts 20 minutes or so. That's why using a tank on defense is a good idea, especially if that tank is green and angry. Apart from the Hulk, you can be sure a high-level Lazy Thor or Black Panther will earn you some skips, as they combine bulkiness with a serious punch. Squishy characters tend to attract attackers, so try not to base your defensive squad on them.
3) Annoyance. This one is a bit more complicated, as different players get annoyed by different actions. Some rules of a thumb exist, though, to help you out. Any time-consuming animations are good - they make the battle longer, and attackers want short fights, remember? So, Daken and Bullseye are perfect for irritating your opponents to the point they'll just skip you to avoid the lengthy duels (unless they have a powered 3-star team, which outclasses 2* defenders). Also, they both come with a really painful set of abilities, forcing the attacker to stay away from collecting certain colours, blocking incoming damage (Daken's regeneration and Bullseye's protect tiles spamming), which makes them even bigger pain in the butt; if you fought such a team in the recently finished Unstable Iso, you probably get the idea. Generally speaking, any ability that prolongs or stalls the fight is useful for defending - stunning (Spidey, duh), healing (OBW, Spidey again), stealing AP (The Hood, OBW once more), potential long cascades (The Hulk, C. Mags, anyone who can shake the board or spam a certain colour will do). Honourable mention goes to Invisible Woman, who is a nightmare to fight against when high-level, fortunately she's too rare to be used on a regular basis, but when I get her properly powered-up, I'm sure as hell I'll be picking her for my defensive setups.
4) Easy usage. This is really vital, as many players tend to forget that the AI plays rather badly, and completely misses the point when playing certain characters requiring careful strategic planning, finesse, saving AP and chaining attacks into combos. That's why GSBW isn't a real threat when controlled by the machine - none of her abilities are used correctly: the AI places tiles randomly when using purple, usually can't save up enough green AP to shoot a Sniper Rifle, and isn't smart enough to remove unconvenient tiles from the board using red. The same applies to MN Mags, for example, IM40, and any other character that requires actual skill to use. The main focus should be on cheap, simple, possibly direct damage abilities, like Thor's, because that way you're not giving the AI a chance to go wrong.
5) Rainbow. It's pretty important to create a team that uses all (or almost all) colours, so that each match brings some significant damage. This is actually more important than on an attacking team, where the human controller can choose matches properly, which the AI sometimes can't do.
So, if we sum it all up, you may come up with several scary team setups to use on defense: The Hulk/Patch/C.Mags? Why, yes of course. Lazy Thor/Punisher/The Hood? Works well too. Lower level needed? Ares/OBW/Daken (or Astonishing Wolvie). Creating a succesful defensive squad isn't easy, but having those basic principles in mind, you will certainly come up with an idea that works for you.0 -
So for one star battles or beginners that want to get a bit higher in the pvp fights I would suggest Venom and Juggernaut. The third character should probably use Blue and Yellow so I guess IM35 is the only choice in one star land.
A two star defense team I would say Ares and OBW are most scary. Combine that with Daken or Bullseye and you use all (No black if with Daken) colors with exactly one skill which leaves no margin for error to the AI.
I do not like Astonishing Wolvie because his Red and Green need to be used in a certain order and the AI sometimes fails horribly. Using his green with 0 red AP is also quite underwhelming. His HP pool lacks too.
I like Ares better than Thor because Thor needs quite long to build up, which gives the opponent a lot of time to build up enough AP to go infinite.
3-star line ups are not where I am at yet, I suppose Thor & BlackPanther (like Polarity writes in his guide) are pretty scary.
Edit: Corrected a mistake Thor & Punisher was meant to be Thor & BP0 -
1*: Go for pure high damage output: IM35 + Venom + Juggernaut.
2*: Ares + OBW + Daken. Ares & OBW intimidate even 3* teams. If enemy OBW gets to use Aggro Recon, it generally means the fight will be uncomfortable. If she uses it twice, you're going to need health packs. Ares will straight-up f--- you up. Daken is extremely annoying, esp. against 2* teams, because his health regen is meaningful against their match damage.
3*: LThor + some combination of BP, Hood, CMags, Hulk. LThor because he's a high-damage tank that the AI can't screw up, BP due to black AOE, Hood for passive AP steal, CMags for purple nuke, Hulk for pure HP and the occasional Clap o' Death.0 -
I get scared of maxed-out Bagmen. Like, maybe that player knows something I don't...0

It always freaks me out when he raises the CD of an allied goon in Simulator. I start thinking he turned into Daredevil somehow...0 -
Daken is underrated on defense IMO. For a lot of people, it can be a huge pain in the **** just to kill him. Same applies doubly to Patch Wolverine with a maxed-out healing factor. I avoid those like the plague, because it ends up taking three times as long to finish the fight. Especially if there's an OBW in the mix.0

Theyve never been an issue for me: you just build ap while killing the other members on their team and burst them down afterwards.0 -
Once You're start using OBW a lot, Daken is not a threat anymore. Leave him for last, them kill him with abilities.
If You have good roster, currently imho only Hood works as a deterrent really. If You wan't to win a fight a fight no matter the time it'll take, You will win it, be it even LT + BP.
Again, if You're using Spidey or CMags combos, nothing can stop You.
Again, if You're using boosts, almost nothing can stop You.0 -
I am wondering if Daken / Ares / Featured Character or OBW / Ares / Featured Character is the better defensive lineup.
I personally skip Daken more often than I skip OBW what do you guys think?0 -
My current defensive team: Hulk + Patch 535.
The fight is risky, cos once Patch launches Zerker, Hulk's Anger will probably either wipe out Your team or do severe damage.
The combination of Hulk hp and Patch regen is also a deterrent. Fight lasts longer and needs a lot of careful planning.
If I'd have to choose the third (No Holds Barred), I'd go with Hood.0 -

Daken is just along for the ride, and since I'm running 3*s, it's pretty easy to burst him down.0
