I'm not looking for sarcastic answers or a fight, I'm just sincerely curious why so many of you who complain about the game non-stop are even still playing it?

I get that there are a lot of broken things and posting about it on the forums is a way to draw attention to the issue and hopefully get it resolved, but it seems like the community as a whole only keeps playing so they can find things to rage about. I don't see many players actually ENJOYING the game itself anymore. So what keeps you here?

yeah idk. I quite enjoy the game.

Looking around GD though, maybe I'm the weird one...

  • Some of us like the basic game, but have problems with some of the details. Wanting those details to get better isn't a fault.

Also, it's better to let the Devs know what they're doing wrong in terms of keeping their playerbase happy, rather than just up and leaving. Otherwise, the Devs would have no idea why people keep deleting the app.
  • I'm actually just coming back after my second break from the game. The frustration does get to me and I find it best to step away. But I do keep coming back. As Bken said in a different post, when we're not venting out frustration on the forums, this community is pretty great. The game is fun. And there is always hope something will click on the dev side and they'll implement more of the changes we as a community have been requesting.

I can't speak for others but I came to the forums because I had a problem. Not with the game itself but with customer support. I had never been on a message board or part of a community but I found others going through the same things I was and others still who had been in my place before. Being able to vent and let out some of the frustration felt kept me from abandoning the game entirely.
I'm glad to hear the complaints here. It helps to assure me that I'm not alone. Sometimes it seems like the only people listening are the other players.
My problem was finally resolved, and I could have easily went back to the game and snubbed the rest of the community but I realized that I'm not the only one with issues and while my input may fall on deaf ears I'll give it in hopes that maybe I can help keep someone else in the game.

Foremost i stay because I do really enjoy this game. I wouldn't play it on a daily basis if I don't.
Secondly, I have put a lot of time and effort into MtGPQ.
Finally, I stay both in the game and in the community because of those that "rage".

I hope that helps you understand my point of view a bit better.

That was an excellent breakdown with a lot of insight. I appreciate it. =] Like I said, I understand and fully support posting about issues and things we'd all like to see change. I think it's the only way to get our voice (potentially) heard and put the game in a direction we all want it to go.

I guess it just surprises me that the rage would be something that actually encouraged players to stay. If I were new to the community, it would likely make me delete the app after reading the first few posts.

Looking at the first several topics in General Discussion, I can see your point. For a newcomer to the game it could be discouraging. I don't want to be guilty of scaring players away.
Perhaps we do complain a lot but we are also helpful and supportive when someone ask. For example check out the "not easy game" thread by kmjakob ( I wonder what happened to him?)

It's boring to read about why someone likes the game, that's pretty true about most things in life though. Complaints get more attention.

    In a way, it's a love-hate relationship.
We like the game that's why we're still playing.
But as we spend so much time on this game we love, we hate all the issues we had to experience and by voicing our feedback, it's a form of care and concern we expressed to the developers on how we want the game to be. In hate, there's love. In love, there's hate. If the balance of this is broken, hate triumphs over love, then we will say goodbye.

I enjoy the game and put time and effort in (and very occasionally, money).

Because of this I care about the direction of the game and have certain expectations of the people who own and operate it. I don't vent here but think the main reason people do is its the only place the community has a voice and has a chance to provide feedback to the developers.

Recently that voice has been acknowledged and responded to and without the venting think it would likely be business as usual and the game we enjoy would suffer as a result. I'm grateful to those who speak up for us and try to correct some of the negative aspects of the game. Having a voice and wanting to effect positive change (and most rant threads have a purpose from what I can see with suggested improvements) is good and doesn't mean people aren't enjoying it, just they want it to be better.

As to why it's perceived as a negative tone here, for me the positive community is off-forum in private chat servers. We discuss decks and strategy, hypothesize about combinations and future releases and basically shoot the breeze. When you have a close group elsewhere it doesn't need a secondary outlet.

With public forums (this one and others) where people have different motivations there tends to be more conflict. Some people like to troll or start fight, some like to be contrarion, others simply just want to quote Die Hard. It's the nature of the beast. What results is often the more negative vibe, especially when there are other avenues for more positive discussion.

In summary, now I know what a TV dinner feels like.

as a long time pc/mobile gamer looking for a new game to play, my first steps are always to read the negative reviews.

Iwill of course make my own opinion thereafter if these negative reviews are truthful and honest or just plain troll posts and rants.

I never base my decision to play solely on 5 stars/positive reviews because there are too many paid ads posing as those.

I used to complain because I really liked the game and saw the potential it had. But the bugs became repetitious. IE One card gets a fix but in the next set a new card has the same bug the previous card had etc etc.

But I quit because of all that, so...

Is nobody going to mention that like most mobile games, it relys on psychologically addictive techniques to keep it's play base invested? I mean, I know that WE, strong minded players are immune to such machinations, but others weaker than ourselves may succumb to these dark forces.

    ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!

I mean, I'm sorry, what did you say? This game is great and not at all gouging players? Absolutely!

The first taste is free, and we all know that the price goes up down the line, BUT...

A big part of the attraction to this game for me is the variability AND the familiarity of the game. MtG hits a lot of nostalgia and personal challenge buttons for me.

I contribute, positive and negative experiences both, ultimately because I care.

I know you do too, shteev. Hang in there.

The alternative communities for this game are amazing. The players that I've come to know over the past year are interesting and dynamic and passionate. It is an honor to play with each of you every week.

If pocketgamer.biz wants to know why we come back and why this game is succeeding despite the cheating, neverending bugs, and lack of communication -- For many of us, it's because we like playing this game together -- even when (quite often) we don't necessarily like playing this game. It's really that simple.

So thank you, to every who makes this game worth playing -- who keeps it fun and interesting -- who we can vent with and joke with -- you make MTGPQ worth it.

Special shoutout to TeamReckless, BlackLotus, 0blivion, tinykitty and TinyPuppy.... for me, you make it all worthwhile.
