Does Venom do more damage in essential nodes?

I looked by chance at the match damage by Venom on the Thor essential node. He matched 3 blue tiles, but damaged Thor for 247. It's only supposed to be 9 x 3, isn't it? There weren't any strike tiles out.....

    Were there any minion/goon enemies? They do equal damage for all colors even though the other character is doing the matching.

    This. Much like your board, the enemy matches will be done by the strongest match damage for that color. One way to see this- look at ghost rider black on goons when there's a tile mover, even though no abilities have resolved. They'll often have penance to pay.
