Classics are too diluted now

And it's only going to get worse once the next 5 is released. I get that d3 wants to change the OML and Phoenix meta. It makes sense but it's not being handled properly IMO. The way it is currently set-up it's forcing people who want better odds to open latest. While this helps slow the growth of OML and Phoenix it kills the chances people have to build up IM46, BSS and Goblin. I have two suggestions I think would help.

1. Colorless covers for all 5 stars. It's hard enough pulling the 5 you want from classics but it is a huge kick to the balls to get one that is a dupe. It's stalled a lot of people from building up their other 5's and this change would probably cut the number of complaints d3 gets in half.

2. Create at least one more category you can pull from. For example

The Avengers: BSS, IM46, Cap, Nat and Hulk
Mutant/Enhanced: Goblin, Bolt, OML (maybe move Hulk here to balance the numbers)
Otherworldly: Phoenix, Surfer, Strange and Thanos

Are these categories perfect? No but I think it's better than the current set-up. It helps shift the meta by splitting up OML and Phoenix and gives us players a better chance to chase the characters we want.

Thoughts?

Latest cost more command points, command points drive sales, dilution pushes players to latests

Do you think they will change that cycle?

I'm talking about what they should do not what they will do.

At a minimum, a third category seems critical. I like your themed suggestions, but the balance would likely get weird over time. I suggest we keep the current Latest (3) - Classic (everything else) setup, but add in a rotating "Featured" category with a rotating 3-4 characters. Because of the increased specificity, it'd need to cost at least the same as Latest (25 cp), and I could even see 30 cp being within the realm of possibility (since now you're getting good odds to pull specific characters with the added benefit of having had time to observe them in the field).

I suggest this because not only does it add a new option, it's not a kick-the-can option of a new category that will eventually fill. They can have an orderly rota, which the playerbase has adapted to pretty well in the past, and players can target their buys beyond the next few additions, yet it still abides by the RNG-based system for 5*s that seems important to them.

they also need to offer an option where you forego your chances at a 5* and go after only 4*. I know lots of people can earn 4* or 25CP easily, but when you are trying to transition to 4* land, you don't get them quickly at all. On top of it, if you offered something like "Latest 20 4*" for 15CP and "Oldest 20 4*" for 10, wouldn't that be fine? I am really hurting for 4* covers right now and RNGesus hates me.

then make elite tokens have better odds for 3* and 4*. Elite tokens are a joke, and yet the name seems to say they should be the best.

I agree, but I'm at the point now where I have embraced this new meta and changing it would do me more harm than good in that it would allow less developed rosters to catch up and compete with me.

I think the advice for newbies going forward is going to be something like:

1.) Save all your LTs and CP until you have enough to pull ~300 Latest tokens
    2.) Pray to RNGesus
3.) Open your hoard and hope you get at least 2 champed 5*s
4.) Start hoarding all LTs until you have 300 LTs
5.) Start using your CP on classics to add champ levels and fill out other 5*s slowly....painfully slowly
    6.) Repeat from #2 forever

Featured Legends, same odds as Latest, with three "Featured" 5*s. Rotate Featured list each season. 25 CP (though let's face it, more like 30).

There are lots of things they could do. The system as it exists now is way too simple.

They could design all sorts of different kinds of tokens. Once upon a time they actually did have a bunch of token types that each offered a subset of the characters in the game, but they scrapped it because people complained about getting the same low-tier stuff over and over. That tech presumably still exists in the game, and it would be trivial to make 6 different kinds of LTs or something.

They already are doing more specialized vaults; they could go deeper in that direction. As far as I can tell, they've proven to be extremely popular.

Ultimately, though, the problem with any new idea they roll out is that it will be too stingy. They don't want people to progress any faster than they are, and dilution is a great brake to throw on people's progression since it's largely invisible. The real argument people need to be making is that stringing out players along the roster development road is just as sure a way to reduce player engagement as ending the road would be. We need a system that clumps players together in similar power categories, not a system that strings them out.

Just make a new 5* only token full of colorless covers and make it cost 10 legendary tokens.

5* progression is supposed to be slow. It's a part of the game model. The higher up you go, the slower your progression becomes.

The two tokens just need a bit of modification, I think.

Latest- add in the "classic" 5 stars at a reduced rate and remove the first 15-20 4 stars.

Classic- lower rates for the latest 4 stars and raise it for classic old 4 stars.

At 25 cp, I should have a chance at winning every 5 star when comes to latest and I also don't want to waste what is the top token with tthe chance to pull IW, The Thing, or Mr F.

Slow is one thing, being quite so random is another entirely, other than the ludicrous cp price for a 5* cover there is no way to target how you progress and in the all too common scenario of chars with 0 covers in 1 or 2 colours you dont even have that option.

What they should do is split classics into generations or seasons or something like that, 3x 5* per generation and the 15% chance as it is now, on the latest token up the overall chance to 20% or possibly double the individual chance of the most recent one so it is still worth buying the most expensive tokens.

Net result, progression is still slow, but at least slightly less random.
