Advice for Returners

Hello gents,

So yesterday I downloaded MPQ again and restored data, after a hiatus since the Ultron release events broke me. That was spring 2015.

Ranks are interesting, though mine did not get populated for the roster (support ticket filed). Champion heroes looks excellent. VIP, useful. Other things look much the same.

So what advice would you offer players such as I? For context I've got 63 heroes at various cover and was transitioning to 4:star: back when. I have a few specific questions but am sure I'll miss something useful....

Specific questions:
1. I'm assuming I should avoid 5:star:s for now, to avoid trashing PVE matchmaking. Is the trigger still the presence of a hero on your roster--not just in your current team?

2. Is under-leveling still a thing? This used to be important to avoid horrid scaling and the guides reflect that... the guides are also not updated for a year+, or at least not the stickied ones.

3. Is the best to obtain 4:star: s still to grab tokens from placement and cross fingers? Keep in mind that at Rank 10 I may be missing something....

Thanks,

If you are transitioning to 4*'s, non levelled 5*'s won't really affect your scaling much since your boosted 3*'s will be in that range anyway. You want to max level your 3*'s and then champion them, cause that will help you transition to 4*'s alot. Your first champion level for 3*'s is a Legendary token. You get 3 specific covers from each 3* and lots of CP, HP and ISO. You can also start a 2* farm for the rewards as well. Its awesome to get a 3* cover since you know you will get at least the 500 ISO, if not a better prize.

I see. So what I gather is that scaling is still based on roster level, and that the main issue with 5:star:s is the risk of outstripping the rest of your roster.

This is not different from the risk of outstripping your previous heroes at earlier transitions. And yes, sounds manageable.

Championing sounds like the way to go. I've several 2:star: champions and can bring up the rest, then work on 3s. It's the ISO, yaknow. Also very few of my 3s are fully covered.

    Much appreciated!

They also put in a change a while back that made it so undercovered 5*'s didn't affect your scaling like before. So unless you get them multicovered and level them, you shouldn't see a hit with scaling. Like I said, your 3*'s that are boosted are going to determine your scaling.

So a single-cover 5:star: starts at 270, which is roughly where 4:star: stops. My current roster is at most 127, up to where I'm carefully pulling heroes (many of which need covers anyway) in preparation for pushing a few to 166 (and then Champion 3:star:).

This is... the best I can do to try and contain scaling issues. My concern remains that if I pull a 5:star: it's going to explode the matchmaker to my detriment. Is this the case? Is my strategy dated or unsound? Should I sit on CP and Legendary Tokens until my roster is in order?

A 5* cover that hasn't been leveled isn't going to affect your scaling, so don't hesitate to hang onto it if you have the roster space. But sitting on CP and tokens remains a good idea if you are still building your 3* roster. Cashing them in will just get you 4/5* covers you can't use yet that will eat up roster space that you may or may not have. Once roster slots start costing 1000HP you start feeling the crunch. Your ISO will be going to your 3* covers anyway.

You may want to use some of that CP to buy covers for your 3* if it's the last cover you need to champ, and that 3* is top tier (IM40, ScarWitch, Cap, DocStrange, as examples). Some advise against this, but 20CP is pretty reasonable for a character that will see a lot of use when champed.

Once your 3* roster is where you want it to be and you think you're ready to move on, bank some roster slots and do a big cash-in on legendary tokens.

Don't feel as though you have to keep your entire roster the same level. In fact, I advise against it. There may be some benefits to it in PVE scaling but it'll hurt you in PVP, and if you want to progress PVP is the fastest place to do it. Champ your 2 & 3-stars as soon as you can so any duplicate covers you get start reaping the champ rewards (ISO, CP, HP, 4* covers).
