Question About Specing

edited March 2014 in MPQ Tips and Guides
So I started this game about a week ago and been enjoying it. I just have one question about specing characters I been seeing in the guides/tips. Does it really matter how much you spec on each ability (Aside from maxing the priority ones)? From what I dug up, he more you spec, the further you can level them.

As an example, I see that Modern Black Widow is best speced as 2/5. The one I have at 4/5. Probably bad example seeing as her Purple ability will get more expensive as you spec it, but does it make that much of a difference? Unless I missed something like a limit on how much you can spec total per hero (Which I have not really run into).

The reason you see people saying 2/5 for MBW is best is because the cheapest purple ability is best for her. As you said, the more you "spec" the higher you can level the character but for MBW specifically you don't really want to level her much since you don't want her matching any colors and then being vulnerable to attacks (since even at max level she has pretty low health). It's a pretty unique situation, as with almost every other character you just want to max out their levels regardless of which covers you get and then you can respec later when you get the covers you want the most.

It can make a pretty big difference depending on how you use the character. In the case of mBW, I found that keeping her purple at 12AP (4 matches) was a lot more important than being able to steal black/purple. This does make it so that you can't level your character to max, but since mBWs abilities don't scale with level, keeping her at low levels is actually better since it means that other characters can tank the damage instead of her. For a new player though, you don't really have to worry about this: a 4/5 mBW is still pretty effective for a 1* roster, and its not worth the time/iso to rebuild her as 2/5. Maybe some time down the road when you have a more developed roster, you can build a 2nd mBW optimally, but until then, just keep on using the one you have.
  • You can only have 13 covers per character. This doesn't affect 2-power characters like Modern Black Widow, who can only have 10 covers when her abilities are maxed out anyway, but for 3-power ones you have to make a choice about which abilities you want at which level (assuming you have enough covers to actually make that choice). Once you have all 13 covers in place, though, you can use further covers received to change the balance of the character's abilities if needed. The recommendations given are for the best balance of powers, which is sometimes arguable and sometimes pretty obvious.

Also, a few abilities like Modern Black Widow's purple arguably get worse at higher levels, usually by demanding more AP for a boost in effect that you may not see as worth it.

What does this mean exactly? And how does one go about doing it? Thanks.

You can only respec a character who has 13/13 covers (is cover-capped), it goes like this: e.g. you have a suboptimal 5-4-4 build for your IM 35 and you got a yellow cover for him. You can see that Train powers button has become active, you just upgrade yellow and you see a screen that prompts you to downgrade one of the two other abilities, red/blue. You choose to downgrade blue and that's it, you now have the ideal 5-5-3 build. You don't receive the spare blue cover, it gets destroyed. No ISO either. No leveling is lost. It's a very good system for 13/13 characters, since you may slap covers with impunity unless they become worse with higher levels.
  • Hey, nice. I've started backreading since last week, and I ran across the subject of respec-ing, and that it's coming soon, several times. I didn't know that the feature is already available. Thanks for the reply!

And you said 13/13 specifically. Does that mean respec-ing is not available to 2-skill heroes?

    Correct
