Did the gem generating algorithm change?

Starting with the EC event, it felt like the gem generating algorithm changed to make the starting board have more potential matches. In my matches, it was frequently the case that both me and the AI would generate huge cascades on our first couple of turns and then empty our hands on turn one or two.
Is this happening to everyone? Or just me?

Just you. My experience is that I have no on-color matches so get a max of 4 mana per turn, and the AI cascades and casts multiple cards every turn.0
