Can Nick Fury be my first max 4*?

So I currently have twelve covers for Nick Fury and will soon have the thirteenth. Whether that be through progression is Class of 2016 (Highly unlikely, but I did reach 900 in Dino's PVP) or through his daily resupply reward given on day 400 something. I'm wondering whether or not it's advisable to max Fury before any other 4*. The only other 4* I have remotely close to 13 covers is Hulkbuster with 11 covers, and it could take me months to finally pull those last two. I don't suspect Fury will be buffed anytime soon due to him not being the worst 4* and because it seems like the devs are only buffing a handful of characters per season (or nerfing, everything is up in the air right now). So, as he is now, could I take Fury to 270 and be alright, or would that just mess my scaling and MMR up and leave me with a 270 character who can't hold his own? Thanks for any feedback given.

tl;dr Can I take Fury to max level and have him as my only maxed 4* and still be able to compete (relatively speaking)?

A championed 4* won't mess up your scaling because all event have buffed 3*s which will be around the same level. It may mess it, though, when heis also buffed.

If I were you, I'd see if I could get the 900 points PVP cover, so you'd actually be able to use the daily progression cover to champion him. Only then, I'd bother maxing him.

Fury was my first champ 4* and when he's powered up, he'll make it easier to get to 900, and get those last two HB covers. He isn't amazing, but when he's boosted to 350, his Blue does 20k damage, which is nothing to sneeze at.
If you're pretty comfortable where you are you could at least wait until you have an extra cover in the queue to get him to 271. You might end up drawing 3 HB covers in that time and regret not having the ISO.

I would put all the iso into IMHB and be patient. If your iso burns your pocket, raise Fury to 200 or 220, but park him there.

It is not a matter of scaling, you should be ok about that; your iso will be way better used elsewhere.

I have him championed, and yes, his blue is amazing when buffed. But his other two are only ok, so he won't be carrying your team. And as your only champion 4*, he would need to carry you. I would wait for something else (like that Hulkbuster).

I used him in the I Choose You PvP with Hulkbuster. He's not game-breakingly good, but he's solid. Slow but steady. If you add SW or IM40, he'll be even better. For reference, I have 4Thor, IMHB, Fury, and XFW champed, and I champed Fury before IMHB.

Any buffed 4* is going to significantly help you in all game modes. Fury is buffed this week, and you can feel the difference. They outmatch level 255 5*s in match damage, too.

Up to you. Some great advice in here, but I don't regret champing him. Another big plus for Fury is that he doesn't have any skills that lag behind the rest. His blue is his clear-cut best, but I like both yellow and purple equally. I'm running him 5/5/3, but I might do better to go 3/5/5 and add SW in this week's PvE.

Fury is a lower mid tier 4*. He's not bad, but he is a bit slow (all of his powers require 10 or more ap), and a bit weak (normal 4* health of 14k base). As others have said, champing him will likely have a marginal effect on your scaling, but won't completely crush your ability to compete.

What you might find though, is that once he is champed, you will have little choice but to use him almost all the time because your scaling is set for 270ish characters. For that reason I always recommend waiting until you have several characters covered and ready to push up into a new tier play all at once, preferrably a group of at least 3 or 4 characters who all play pretty well with each other have cover all the colors. (this is true for each * tier.)

So maybe wait until you have both fury and imhb and hopefully even a third 4* (preferably with a solid green power) all ready to go up to 250+.

In the mean time, pushing fury and IMHB up into the 180-200 range isn't hugely expensive and will make them pretty viable options when matched with your 3* roster. That might provide you with some enjoyable variety without handcuffing you to a single character for most matches.

Great advice overall, but I did not find this part to be true for myself. 4Thor was my only 4* champ for several months (3-4? can't remember) and while I used her often even when she wasn't boosted, it wasn't because scaling made me feel obligated to use her. I used her because she powered through matches ridiculously fast when buddied with IM40. She's not top tier, but she's definitely better than Fury, and I still only used her to help me get done faster than if I used a slower, steadier 3* team.

Otherwise, I was able to use predominantly 3* teams even with Thor sitting there at 270+. My scaling is marginally higher this week with IMHB and Fury *both* boosted, but I could still get by on the hardest clears without absolutely needing one, the other, or both.
