How to join alliance

I just started playing a few days ago and am loving it, and was advised that joining an alliance would be a good thing, but the question is how do you join one?

To join an alliance, first tap the gray button on the main game screen. At the next screen, you will be offered to either create your own alliance, or you can search for an alliance on the next tab. Alliances with available spots will display a join button next to their name in the search results area.
