Early days of MTGPQ

I recently started playing in the middle of August, so I'm relatively new. I've heard though a little bit from forum posts, and also one of my friends, that mythics and rares were super easy to get and just flows in constantly. Also I heard the packs were cheaper and it was a guaranteed mythic for big boxes.

Not sure if it's all true or not, nor what else I don't know about. But if it's true, man these devs are punishing the new players hard.

The guaranteed Mythics were only a part of CERTAIN packages. They were never a fixture - that and these packages were almost twice as expensive than the usual counterparts!

Also, there was a way to get free boosters using mana runes instead of waiting 8 hours for your next freebie - which is something we could really use: a mana rune sink!

    It's not true at all.

It's so much easier to round out your collection now.

In the early days, your only source of new cards were from boosters. And your only source of boosters was via purchase with crystals. And crystals were only available through the single player storyline objectives.

Runes to level up your walkers were scarce. Outside of story mode, quick battles only gave 50 runes per win.

I opened 2 boxes and only got mythic in one of them, so I don't know where these claims come from.

Now you get crystals flowing like water via events and quick battle. You get rares/mythics as rewards. Recently, you even get bonus stuff as a coalition. If anything, I'm jealous of how easy new players have it.

Not true at all. I downloaded when there where less than 5000 players and switched to iPhone a month later and had to start over. I got one mythic out of all of my boxes. In the early days there were no special card packs, no special creatures or even daily packs. The only way we got cards was on the calendar awards and it was almost impossible to get crystals. Boxes cost exactly the same and there was only Origins for months.

For the first 3-4 months there were no rankings or rewards for QB and no one had the cards to get through story mode.

We really just played for the fun of the game.

Now, I get 2-4 mythics a week through event and QB awards -- granted they're all dupes because they're all SOI, but still -- I do. (Please see and bump my post "Events" under Suggestions and Feedback)

The reason the old players have so much is simply time. In fact there are players in my coalition that have more than me and started 6 months later. The only upper hand we might have is PW, because we've been here when all were released the first time and all we ever earned back then was Runes so many of us would bank hundreds of thousands.

    Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

I find it really difficult to tell how easy new players would find this game now, but it does seem to me like they'd get a rough ride. Rares and Mythics are about half as common in boosters as they used to be, I think? Certainly less common. QB used to be pretty easy as it was full of starter Nissa decks, and now it's wall to wall aggresisve Koths and Chandras. And of course in the VERY early days, we could buy free boosters for runes, although being 3-packs they didn't have a high drop rate of Rares and Mythics.

We do get a lot of events, tho. I certainly get a lot of crystals and mythics out of those, but I wonder how much loot a newbie with a small collection would manage to acquire.

I think you're probably romanticing the past. I've personally not felt any drop in the drop rate at all. It's always been like this for me. No idea how people got a mythic in every box.

Qb used to be pure Nissa because Nissa was the best. Then Chandra took over, and now it's koth.

As for buying packs with runes, you're probably forgetting that it was hard to get runes then. 50 runes per quick battle meant most of us were struggling just to max our first 5 walkers.
  • But PWs also capped out at level 50! And we didn't have dual colored PWs yet!

Yes we are living in good times, mythics and crystals are easier to accumulate due in a large part to the constant barrage of events we are currently enduring.
yes we are now reaping the rewards of almost a year of day in day out playing, we've all been through the grind to be in a position to be able to be competitive and get the rewards.
To stay competitive is still a lot of hard work. there are times I feel if I stopped or took a break I'd quickly fall behind and just not be able to catch up.

If I started playing now I don't think I would continue, when the game first started Crystals were indeed very difficult to come by but at least rares and mythics would drop enough to keep you interested.
The drop rates are definitely lower just getting the daily rewards surely cannot sustain you or offer enough incentive to keep playing.
Competing for the rewards in QB, I just can't see how you could with the speed decks and people with multiple accounts checking when rounds are due to start and finish.
Competing in the events against the lurkers with Platinum/gold lvl decks hiding out in silver and bronze for the easier ride and playing lvl 60 decks all the time must be incredibly frustrating.
I really feel the game would be very difficult for any newbie to come into now.
