A Sad End : Lazy Characters

I thought with the overwhelming negative response d3 wouldn't be foolish enough to make another lazy character. One my my draws to this game was seeing the new and interesting ways new characters would come out with new abilities, but with the addition of these lazy characters it shows that they have given up on innovation. It may have been one thing if they were trying to phase out their 2* counterparts but they aren't. The 2* could have still had a use if new characters came out that synergized with them, but these lazy characters make you feel like you have wasted your time(and money for some) leveling a character. Out of the many things that they could have done (more 1* or 2*, villains and plenty of characters left) they decided to rehash the same content. Ultimately, Steve Rogers was a death blow for me, I'm done.(200 hours gone)

TL:dr. Lazy concept is game breakingly boring and depressing, Gameover

  • Forum regulars are a tiny percentage of the overall MPQ playerbase. Yes, the advent of gold characters was not popular on the forums, but apparently the data d3 is gathering from usage and other sources is telling them that repeating the most popular characters in an efficient manner is worth the cost/benefit trade-off.

Take the time and upvote your distaste and the distaste of others, and maybe a dev will see or maybe at least explain this nonsense. I hope it is more then "We get money for doing this stuff and its easy, DO IT MORE!"
  • They probably had both of these lazy releases ready to go whether the response was good or bad. Especially since the lazy captain America release goes along with the movie release. Don't quit just yet - there is a new 4* cover coming soon.

Its so that they can get new content out to us with relatively little work so that they can focus the saved dev time on other areas of the game. The alternative to this isnt other new content, its no content at all.
  • The only problem I have with lazy Thor is that all his skills did too much damage. His skillset was actually quite needed in the 3* and he single-handedly ended the yellow drought and provided a badly needed non-broken counter to Patch (Spiderman always countered him, but Spiderman counters anybody).

Captain America's skillset seems quite useful in the 3* tier too and I don't have a problem with that.

Also, the devs have explained their reasoning behind the lazy characters and part of it is to improve other aspects of the game. Part of it was because many people wanted to level their Thor past 85.

Yeah, I felt bad using the term at first, but it's catchiness has grown on me. I think most of us understand that these gold characters are more of a way for you guys to get more characters out to the playerbase so that dev time can be focused improing on other aspects of the game. (Although it remains to be seen whether or not it would be better to just not have new content as opposed to gold characters.)
That's pretty much it really. We're not a large team, so the people that are designing characters also tend to have their arms elbow deep in character creation too. Having Gold characters made means that they can do some minor work on tweaks there and focus more on other aspects of the game.

It's kind of sad that I'm going to aim for rank 76 - 100 so I can beef up my OBW.

You mean the incredible hard work of deciding a reward list and chosing 3 enemies for a dozen of nodes? Oh and of course coming up with the incredible writing. "Imma beat you up! - No imma beat YOU up!".

Characters that behave almost exactly as another character that already exists.

Gold Star characters. Called lazy because they added a star and slightly tweaked the old character.

The repeat powers really deflate my perspective on these new characters, as well as their 2* versions. I don't discount the time and effort required to build good (and as importantly, game balanced) power sets, but I would personally rather see less new characters than these buffed clones. This may not fit their business model of driving constant ISO need, however.

Cap was an especially poor choice as well. He is popular because he is necessary when it comes to board control, but his power set already has some significant problems (specifically that his yellow is nearly useless - defense tiles are minimally usefull against minion fights and it's too slow to actually prevent damage against matching opponents), so regurgitating them just leaves two characters that need tweaking.
  • I guess I should point out that devs (and I don't just mean for this game) don't work on the present. They work ahead. What you see now and maybe in the next event(s) were likely developed and sent off much much earlier. Weeks, maybe even months before we see them. They don't sit waiting for the complaints or the rare accolade to pour in before they start work on the next character or event. There just isn't enough time to do so. Sure, they may be able to make some tweaks here and there before things go "live" but it's not going to be something big like the removal/replacement of a character and definitely not an outright redesign. If we're lucky, they would just have 2 of these gold characters lined up, meaning LA-Z Cap would be the last one before we get something else. If not, we'll likely have to live with at least 1-2 more of them before we get a change up. It's sad for you, people may be unhappy but that's just how things work.

Not to mention that Lazy Thor is also fatter than 2*......
  • Yeah, I'm out of this game too. There's so much **** one can take.

I really hope your right, Id like to think the best of them, and i really enjoy the game. TIme will tell
  • I think the biggest issue with the Lazy characters is it just accentuates how Sisyphean this game can be.

You are expected to grind out 9 days of battles (assuming you have all the correct characters that are buffed/required) in a chance to win another character that you already 1) don't like his skillset 2) don't need 3) can't even (effectively) use when you do "win" him.

But you know that you will need him to help you win future characters that you may want/need, so you are forced into it.

The insult to injury in all of this, is that you have to spend 350-450+ HP (for many) for the priviledge of housing yet another 3 star character you don't have the covers/ISO to even utilize. With many weeks or months of playing before you might even get a chance to enjoy the reward.

I completely agree and would love to see them tweak this more in the players favor. I don't really have a suggestion about how to fix it though.

  • What makes this situation worse is that they said they would avoid making alternate versions of existing characters. Now, they have released a good number of new characters, but I find these 3* versions much more offensive than alternate versions. At least with the alternate versions they tried to make the abilities vary.
